Yep. 15c, every time. Kinda nice privelege.

Anyhow, Sony was speculated to have intended the Cell to be the only major IC in the PS3, however, that never happened, and nVidia was called in at the last minute to rebrand and gimp a 7800GTX to work with the PS3.

The cell is quite powerfull its also because of its architexture its a pian to code for.
I do remember reading that the cell was able to render an explosion in realtime . I dont quite get how it gets so low ppd when folding though? do you just fold on the RSX?

Wasnt their a video of it running xp really slowly? iirc.

Capcom once said in an interview about Xbox 360 that its 'Xenon' CPU is about as fast as a 3.2Ghz Dual Core Pentium 4 Extreme Edition with hyper threading.

That would be the old Pentium Dual Cores and not the newer ones that are powered by the 45nm Wolfdale core.

Now console developers always say that Cell is roughly twice the performance of 360's 'Xenon' CPU. This would put Cell at the same level as an Athlon II x4 CPU running at around 2.8Ghz.

The other thing is that although Cell has 7 'cores' 6 of those 'cores' are not able to execute general purpose code and are limited to in essence, Floating point work only which is very limiting.

Floating point is awesome for graphics tasks but when it comes to general game code, Memory management and enemy ai they are useless and all that has to be handled by the main PowerPC core in Cell.

So a 980x is around2.5-3x the performance of Cell at default clock speed and even faster when overclocked.

Stanford can assign whatever point value to WU they want so they could make one unit worth 50000 points if they wanted too....

Why do people keep asking this question...the Cell is a completely different beast. It does what it does best. It's like if someone tried to rip out a Cell and shove it into a 1366 socket. Sure it would fit after a few bangs from the trusty mallet, but it wouldn't make a difference. PS3 was built at a hardware level for specific purposes, the 980x is nowhere near the same. Not saying one is more powerful then the other, they're just...different

The cell is very good value for money though, if only we could still run linux .
I think its amount of memory limits it in OS's though.
Ive recently been fixing ylod of ps3's and selling them cheap to friends.

There is a book about how some of the cell was stolen by microsoft and stuff, ive read a bit of it some of it is quite funny.

But i see people getting like 3000ppd out of a ps3, so it would take like a few weeks to get 50000? surely it should be getting 50kppd.

There is no coneection between processing power of PS3 and how much points you get for a WU from Stanford... It's just like GPU and CPU work units you cant really compare the points and processing power there either...

Also from Stanford:

Quote:
It seems that the PS3 is more than 10X as powerful as an average PC. Why doesn't it get 10X the credit as well?

We balance the points based on both speed and the flexibility of the client. The GPU client is still the fastest, but it is the least flexible and can only run a very, very limited set of WUs. Thus, its points are not linearly proportional to the speed increase. The PS3 takes the middle ground between GPUs (extreme speed, but at limited types of WU's) and CPU's (less speed, but more flexibility in types of WUs). We have picked the PS3 as the natural benchmark machine for PS3 calculations and set its points per day to 900 to reflect this middle ground between speed (faster than CPU, but slower than GPU) and flexibility (more flexible than GPU, less than CPU).
Ignore the 10x as powerful figure don't know where they took it from
