No doubt the SLI setup would perform better on benches etc but i always prefer to go for the single highest spec i can for these two reasons:

SLI is always more prone to problems

a single card gives you a clear and easy upgrade path down the line, just bung another in

I have 2 x 460s, but unless you gte second hand now, its cheaper to get one 570, unless you already have a 460, may aswell go with the 570

I'm currently running two 2gb GTX560s in my main rig, and have had between 2-4 GPUs in my main rig for the last seven years. Other than the early problems with Quad SLi and the issues I had with 3 way Vista launched, it's been largely "hands off" user friendly.

That said, if this were my choice I'd get the GTX570OC or GTX480. The performance difference isn't large enough here to justify multi card. Multi card is to get performance you can't with one, or to extend the life of an original purchase by adding a second card cheap.

Gtx 570 all the way! with the new 590 just around the corner i say you could pick up a second card much cheaper in the future aswell

Look at this way:

2xGTX460's = (roughly) ~400$. In terms of performance, it equals to 1 GTX 480.

1xGTX570 = $340 (newegg, after rebate). In terms of performance, it equals to 1 GTX 480.

It's your choice, but I'd go with a 570, because then you can upgrade later. If you sli'd two gtx460's you're done because you can't sli more than two 460's.

Hope this helps

this was posted yesterday and will hopefuly help answer your question.

Also this was about 3-4 days ago and discusses the benefits of sli.

http://www.overclock.net/graphics-ca...go-sli-cf.html

again the value is the most important part, if you have the money and its burning a hole in your pocket get the 580!

Edit: with the next gen on its way you would be mad to purchase a top end card at the moment, when the next gen arrive they are going to blow this gen away, and you will have just spent alot of money and the waste will become more and more apparent. So in my opinnion you really want the best bang for buck right now. I had the same decision of that you had about a month ago hence im very opinnionated but its every man to their own! Good luck you wont be dissapointed no matter which rote,
