[EG]Sony "not even debating near-future PS4" - Page 12

This doesn't make any sense. 10yr lifespan does not mean that Generations wont overlap. The PS2 had a 10 year lifespan, but the PS3 launched roughly half way through it (6 years after PS2 first launched). We're now 4, going on 5 with the PS3, meaning if they keep cadence, PS4 would be about 20 months from now.

At this point its all speculation. Unlike the PS2, which pretty much hit its stride out of the gate, and is still going strong all thigns considered, PS3 didn't hit maturity until recently, and as such, still has quite a bit of life left in it.

That said, I don't buy that they aren't working on it. This sounds more like a defense of the viability of longevity that the PS3 retains rather than a denial of the existance of PS4 R&D. IBM announced EOL for Cell a while back, meaning Sony's most likely going to have to pick - yet again - a new architecture to base their console off of. In order for this to work, as they discovered the hard way with the PS3, they need to give plenty of time to developers to familiarize themselves with the architecture. The more radical/different it is, the more time they'll need. I suspect Sony will stick with some variant of the PowerPC architecture for the sake of familiarity in the industry to reduce overhead and encourage adoption, it is the architecture that is currently found in all 3 consoles in the current gen (in some form or another), and even in generations past.

That said, x86, ARM and even Cell are viable options. x86 for obvious reasons, but unlikely again, for obvious reasons (lot of red tape there, plus they'd have to find someway to maintain their walled garden "it's a console, not a PC"). However, I think that would be an excellent development, albeit extremely wishful and unlikely. ARM is unlikely, but its making quite a splash, and is showing to have quite a bit of potential. With Windows 8 supporting ARM and Nvidia (among others) aggressive push into ARM space, it is certainly an interesting choice. If they go this route though I bet were looking at at LEAST 3 years before PS4 though (that wold be a rather radical change in architecture). And Cell, because hey, the one in the PS3 is the first iteration. IBM continued to work on it. They very well could use the latest die shrink and the most modern iteration available, clock it up, pack it with cores, pair it with a modern GPU and more ram and there you go. In fact, this may be the best option, but given IBM announced the end of the cell project, I'm not sure if it's an option thats on the table. Cell based servers are still up for sale, so its not entirely unreasonable, but who knows. Regardless, I'm pretty certain this decision has already been made (and as such question if ARM is even in the running now that I think about it), we've just got to wait for the info to go public.

Anyway, I'd venture to assert that chances are Sony wont talk PS4 until after Microsoft officially announces the next Xbox as that is widely seen as their direct competitor. Word is that Sony is trying to get PS4 out of the gate before 720 (or whatever they call it), but regardless I'm suspecting 18-36 months before the PS4 hits shelves. I'd put my money on Nov 2012, with it going stateside sometime in 2013; but very well may decide to bide their time and milk the PS3 for all they can if their competition doesnt deliver before then. By this time next year we should know the answer (btu we most certainly wont have them on the shelves)

Consoles that were expandable in the past all failed in the marketplace. It's just too fast of a moving target. However, Sony needs to upgrade their graphics, they are at least five generations behind, not to mention that the PS3 has just too little memory for today's gaming.

Ten years, even five years ago, console gaming was vastly superior to that of the PC - but times have changed, and PCs have advanced processors, lots of memory, lots of storage, better OSes, and have advanced video systems that can handle it all. Consoles are just not advancing, too many games are wedged into too little memory, and any "upgrade" serves to fragment the market, and the costs of "upgrades" drives more people to other consoles (or to PCs).

This could actually be good for PC gaming in the long run.

By doing this, it will allow the consoles to upgrade over the years. They sell a bunch, then 2-3 years down the road they offer the expansion upgrade allowing for even better graphics, and more sales. It will basically have an expansion slot that you slide the new piece into. Effectively going from 1 card to SLI. It is the most logical and profitable way to do business.

I 100% guarantee this.

If they're upgradable and have keyboard and mouse support, consider PC gaming 100% dead.

no reason they wont.

As the next gaming systems will also be multimedia centers. The current ones are, but are also limited because they lack easy functionality for certain things, such typing.

Yup, because your console will now be a PC...? Wait a second. They defeated the PC market by becoming PCs?

just picture your controller with a sliding top similar to cellphone, and underneath it has a full qwerty keyboard.

Bam controller and full keyboard all in one.

sounds abit umm wrong to me , concentrating on the ps3 still ? what for yeah alright it was good in 06/07 but now its nothing but a ps2 that plays blurays to me ..

Sony can do much better on their new consoles , they could release something so epically awsome but they insist on "concentrating" on the ps3 lol good work sony stay in the past , keep making new televisions or stereos instead .

Sony have the $$$ and the brains to make 1 awsome console , the ps3 is not it .. try again .

this is why i am a pc gamer .

Yeah and seeing as developers don't want people pirating thier hard work, I guess you're some what right.

I'm going to go on a limb here and say that Valve might be setting it's sights to be apart of a next gen console considering the change of heart at E3 last year.
