[Solved] Asus Sabertooth Random No Post

A friend of mine is having bit of a problem. When he turns on his computer, it sometimes doesn't boot, only the CPU LED on the motherboard is bright red. In every 1/10 times he boots, it boots successfully.

Also randomly when the PSU is turned on, it strikes out the electricity. What could be the cause of that? Bad grounding?

His rig:

- Asus Sabertooth X58
- Intel i7 950
- Corsair XMS3 1333
- Corsair HX850
- EVGA GTX 460

All help will be greatly appreciated!

* EDIT * The strike out was because of bad electric table, no the HX fault.

I would bet for some kind of shorting or something that doesn't make proper contact, but I incline to say it's a short in the PSU because of this "randomly when the PSU is turned on, it strikes out the electricity". In his place in stead of trying 10 times to start it he should try to diagnose and solve the problem; a broken PSU can toast everything and that's too nice of a rig to throw to the bin.

My take is to:
1) Change/check the power cable
2) Plug in a different wall plug, in another room preferably, in order to check if the fault is on the walled power wires. Also measuring the wall plug voltage should point out to a potential fault.
3) Make sure the PSU is properly screwed to the case so it's well grounded
4) Disconnect all non-essentials from the PSU. With a multimeter, upon startup, he should monitor voltages on the +12V, +5V and +3.3V rails.

Hope it helps.

Test the PSU with a proper PSU power tester (any computer repair shop has one), reset CMOS and hope for the best.

My old HX850 fried Intel 160, AMD 1090, Crosshair IV, 2 x Samsung F3 1TB, HD5850, 8800GTS and it self, so yeah I knew that one.. However I should mention that I'm not sure it was completely the HX fault since I was going a little experiment with the 8800GTS. Never the less I find it strange that the HX didn't have some kind of protection for such things..

I've got 2 different testers, the PSU passed both tests, but forget about that problem since it doesnt happen on another wall slot.

However I'm still having hard time booting the computer up since it stops before post, any hints?

In case somebody else has this problem, it was the motherboard. Still got a strong believe in Asus.
