Well it depends on what you want to do and budget:

Sheer performance menas the i7 1366 or Sandybridge 1155 (2600K) are the kings at the moment.

Price/performance is closer with AMD and Intel trading blows ovr various levels/prices.

Bottom line is, do some research on the internet to see benchmarks that are releative to your usage and understand what budget you have.

Keep in mind overall costs aswell - ie mobo/RAM/CPU/Heatsink before making your mind up.

What are your current specs anyway?

Hi,

So then the question of price def comes into it.

If you want to have an upgrade at minimum cost - you could get the Phenom II X6 and another 5770 for crossfire mode!

Or as you have 3 sticks of memory - a triple channel 1366 i7 if you have loads of money!

i had the same dilemma about 2 months ago, amdx6 or i7 9xx? in the end i went for i7 and i dont regret it a bit. i do a lot of CAD work, so more cores = better performance and efficiency. and in that regard the x6 sounds more promising, but the HT with i7 somewhat compensates the 2 core deficit, compared to my c2d in my office, the i7 eats it for breakfast...
funny thing is that i had the exact same processor as yours, and also unlocked to 3 cores, but at 3.8ghz with 4 gigs of ram, same graphics as i do now, and in terms of gaming the improvement with i7 is immense! if ur a serious gamer, then you know what to get
end of the day, the question kinda boils down to WHATS YOUR BUDGET?

Well perhaps we should ask you the question:
What is your PC not doing that you want it to do?

You really don't have a bad system as is, but if you're wanting an upgrade the cheapest thing you could do is buy an x4 or x6 and drop it into your existing system. Gaming wise Intel or AMD, it doesn't matter. And multitasking wise the x6 is more then up to snuff as well.

What time frame are we looking at to have SB boards? That's basically what's screwing things up right now. I'm looking at the same decision for a family member's gaming build.

I own both the i52500k and amd 1090t. I love my crosshair iv formula amd 6 core setup and has plenty of power sitting at 4.2ghz. That being said, my i52500k walks all over my 1090t in every benchmark scenario and is bench/game stable at 5.2ghz vc 1.46. Cinebench scores are just retarded at nearly 9 vs 6.5 on my 1090t. Both are great in their own right so if you need something now, go 6 core but if youre looking in a couple months then SB hands down. This is my 1st Intel chip as Ive used amd since the dx280 days. I've had more fun beating the crap out of my sandy rig just to see how far it'll go. During OC tweaking I find myself saying "holy fahk you've gotta be kidding me" a lot. As it stands I can get cpuz validation at 5700 at 1.59 vc. I wouldnt be surprised if at some point someone posts a suicide run at 6ghz lol........
