2200 budget? What can i build? - Page 3

Keep in mind that if you do go with the softmod route your customer won't get tech support since it's a consumer/gaming card that's been flashed to a professional/workstation card.

Part of the reason why the premium is placed on workstation cards is because it comes with lots of tech support (or at least that's what I'm told), that said it's up to the customer to say whether or not it's worth it. For a professional studio like Pixar or whatever the premium is just the cost of doing business, if you consider deadlines and if a deadline is missed/delayed they might lose a lot more than what they saved by using a consumer level card (EDIT: Not saying that consumer cards are inherently unstable with workstation programs, just you get a higher level of tech support if you need it).

Anyways, just to stay safe I'd say go with something like the GTX 260 (FX4800) or 8800 GTX (FX4600) if you're going to softmod the card.

I'm also sure your client would appreciate it if you included an SSD. I know how excruciating it can be to wait for programs like AutoCAD and ArcGIS to load up (especially on a slow laptop like mine). Especially after they crash and you have to restart the program.

You can dumb down the psu to an 850 (corsair/antec), and also a 1090t instead of the 1100t if you needed to save cash. I would stick with the quadro card if all he is doing is autocad type work.

Everything else looks pretty solid. As others mentioned, if you went the Intel path just pickup a gigabyte/asus motherboard and an i7-950 and RAM that fits the board. It'll cost you a little bit more money, but it will be better than the AMD cpu even at stock.

Otherwise, solid. Gluck with it and I'm sure the customer will be happy regardless.

That's a hell of a profit to build 1 computer. I should get into the computer building business. Could make so much money.....

Go with a Corsair TX850 for power supply, you could even go with a TX750. That system doesn't suck up too much power to begin with. 1000W is overkill.

For more profit, go with a nice mid tower over the 700D.

I remember hearing a lot of horror stories of MSI boards with VRMs going boom and catching fire with 6 cores. I think those processors in those stories were overclocked X4 and X6 procs. Something about the mobos not being able to handle higher TDP or wattage of the procs since they didn't have enough phases on the boards. Maybe switch to Gigabyte or Asus?

You could save up to $270 with a different case and a different PSU.

I hope that comes with at least a 2 year warranty from you. $900 profit off 1 PC is quite a lot.

Well like I said the Antec 300 is a good mid tower (no lights!) and is quite cheap. The build quality is not amazng but I doubt your customer will be opening the case to check!

In terms of Workstation cards, a fellow OCN user (Skripka) showed me a very interesting link about a Quadro Card 5000, i know it is only one review and some people might consider this not to be enough as an argument but still a least it is some evidence for you:

http://review.techworld.com/sme/3236...o-5000-review/

Check out the tables towards the bottom. It shows that the Quadro is superior in rendering, but poor for gaming and no different in movie processing.

I hope this helps in making your mind up.

isn't it true that every gtx cards have CUDA feature and CAD supports it so why waste money on workstation graphics cards? Maybe I'm wrong?
