Are the Core i3/i5 Dual Cores a FAIL? - Page 3

post #21 of 31
An i3 at 4.5GHz is a realistic overclocking goal. Im pretty sure it will smoke the Athlon X4 is most benchmarks.

Why are you comparing the Core i3 Overclocked to a Athlon Processor? Is the Athlon Overclocked?

i3-540 = $122 (4.5 GHz On Air) - A Dual Core

Phenom II X4 965 = $160 (4+ GHz on Air)

i5-2500k = $220 (5 GHz On Air)

You say your i3-540 can keep up with most Quad Cores, but can it keep up with a Phenom II X4 965 @ 4 GHz?

If it can then I'd say the i3-540 is a pretty damn good chip and will glady go home with my tail between my legs + owned...

But I gotta see the proof...

At Stock...
Phenom II X4 965 Benchmarks (3938)
Core i3-540 Benchmarks (2817)
Difference = 1121 or 28.4 % Difference
If you overclock both to THE SAME GHz, the difference will be?????

Logic says you are not correct..

These discussions keep popping up o.O

i3's make great cost effective gaming rigs, they clock high and support Hyperthreading. A lot of us are just gamers who also browse the web often. Please notice I said a lot of us, so please dont victimize yourself

Heres real world benches, not synthetic #$*^ that doesnt determine how I feel after a game session:

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...omparison.html

however i5's (dual) I dont see much of a point to, i5 750/60's are nice though

Of course those fail, they aren't SB.
i5 2500k is a winner. Those you listed should cost way less now to compete with SB.

Gaming wise I didn't really see a difference between my old core i3 540 vs my core i7 870 @ 4.0 ghz

+1, there really isn't a difference, the i3s may be doable, the i5 dual cores are definitely a fail in my book, but then the i5-750 is really where it's at for gaming, as it provides great performance & a stellar CPU...

If we look at AMD Athlon II X4, which is like $90 - $100, I'd say that would be a better decision that the i3 for gaming, but maybe that's just my thinking, what do you think?

=================================

The i5-2500k however just replaced the i5-750, and will continue to in the future, unfortunately..

(I'm losing my 1156 MB & i5-750 damn you Intel!)

1155 will be the next discussion I suppose, though some techs are already pointing out that the i3/i5 dual cores are not worth it in the 1155 platform as well, so we can see some validity as to why we are even discussing this topic to begin with...

I'm more interested to see what AMD is bringing to the table to even consider jumping over to Sandy Bridge yet (not even considering the Cougar Point Problems in one iota), just because the prospect of a new Architect from a company who has been invisible almost for far too long is very anticipatory to say the least..

=======================

Athlon II X4 = Win ($90-$110) (This seems more sensible than getting a Dual Core)
Phenom II X4 = Win ($140 / $160) <<< (Awesome Performance at this price, no doubt)
Phenom II X6 = Win (Only because it's price point and performance is comparable to the i5-750/760)
Core i5-750/760/2500k = Win ($190-$230)

But that's just my 2 Cents, what do I know...

I loved my i5 650, probably the best chip I have owned. Only cost me $150.

I got 5.6ghz out of it.

I think the i3's are great, great for gaming and great for htpc's as well.

But the i5 duals now those are just stupid. No reason to spend the extra money.
