Unlocking cores with mobo combo

Thread Starter
I just ordered this processor and mobo from newegg.
AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103846
BIOSTAR A880G+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138283

This is for a budget build for a friend. Now I could probably leave everything as stock, but I am wondering if this board is safe to try to unlock the other 2 cores with?

Its safe but you have to remember why the cores were disabled in the first place. They were not as stable as the rest of them, so you may need to raise the vcore a little bit. The worst case scenario is the cpu not being stable and crashing all the time.

This is for a budget build for a friend. Now I could probably leave everything as stock, but I am wondering if this board is safe to try to unlock the other 2 cores with?

The 555 should unlock to atleast a 3 core cpu, I have a 555 witch unlocks too a quad and oc's to 4.6 for benchmarking and 4.2 for 24/7 use.

This all depends on witch cpu version you have, check your stock volts this will tell you witch version you have. If you have a 1.35v stock volt cpu then you will get 3.6-4.0ghz, staying with in safe voltage.

If you have a 1.275 tdp version then you should be very happy, because you shoud get 4ghz @1.42v, easy.

but @ 4 ghz your nb speed is best @ 2600-3000 depending on the board and the quality of the nb.

If you want a very very very safe oc then i would recomend you oc the cpu to 3.6 and leave the volts at stock level.

but remeber to run at least 3-6 hours of prime 95, to ensure the cpu is fully stable at that speed.

good luck and i hope this helps

Yes that board has the ability to unlock the cores, though if your not going to overclock the processor then why spend the $$ on a black edition? You could get a true triple core for $18 cheaper, and use that $$ to buy a better board. X3's have a much higher potential to unlock a 4th core than an X2 BE becoming a quad core

cores are not deactivated just because they are faulty most are locked because of demand, i would say around 80% are good

the only thing i did not get is a heatsink, what is recommended for these chips? Will be doing if anything a mild OC as I will not have access to this system but once every few months...maybe

EDIt remember this is a budget system, not gonna put out the money for anything like the d14, she has about $30-40 to play with if that now.

100% get zalamn c10x for 35 uk its a bargain, 320w cpu cooler, witch held my 1100t @4ghz @1.4 @40c max load and 18 idle, its the only choice..

and is almost silent

price vrs proformance = best on the market atm
