And now I need new Speakers

Thread Starter
**TL.DR at the bottom**
I bought this set of 5.1 Logitechs as an Open Box deal from Walmart 2 years ago (I know, two very bad things in the same purchase: buying something for a computer from Walmart, and buy an Open Box item from Walmart - but they were just $30 and I desperately needed speakers). After some research I discovered they were actually a European model... go fig. Part numbers were for a European set, but the plugs and power setup was for American power...

Anyway, they just died on me this morning. They tried to start beat-boxing to some 90s music and then went kaput.
Initially I thought it might have been my sound card, but after playing with the settings and trying a different sound card with no improvement, it has to be the speakers.

Does anyone have any suggestions for replacements?
I would like either a 2.1 or 5.1 set and under $100. An optical S/PDIF in would be nice (along with the standard 3 1/8" wire inputs), but not critical - I only want it so I can simplify my Xbox setup and run optical S/PDIF direct to the speakers, rather than run the R/L wires into the sound card and back out to the speakers. An additional R/L stereo hook-up would be a nice to have as well, but not critical as well.

I realize I just described the Z-5500s exactly, except for the "under $100" part, and as much as I would love to get my hands on a set, they are simply too expensive (unless someone here is thinking about selling their set for cheap )

TL.DR:
I do a lot of gaming, but I have an almost constant stream of music flowing from my speakers when I'm not gaming. From classic rock and metal, to Alt. Rock, Alt. Rap, Classical, Techno - pretty much everything except stereotypical pop and rap.
An optical S/PDIF hook-up direct to the Xbox would be nice, but not required in any way. I don't even have any S/PDIF (Optical or Coax) on my sound card - though I do have optical and coax out on my on-board, which I'd rather not use. Additional R/L stereo inputs would also be nice to have.
Think Z-5500s (or along those lines), but under $100. I'm fine with either 2.1 or 5.1, but a woofer is a must for me.

Any thoughts guys?

Not much options that have optical input/output. for under 100 dollars. At that price range i do not know of many. if you decide to pick up the budget a bit. m40's and swans m10 are very good 2.1 setup. As far as surround sound goes.... i am not sure the Z-5500s are decent and i hear mixed review about them. But for computer speakers i am sure they will do fine. try to find them on ebay maybe.

Other than that, i would just check for frys or microcenter sales.
http://newspaperads.mercurynews.com/...px?advid=32664

i check this sit ever so often and frys will usually have some logitech speakers on sale every other day or so.

Swan M10 hands down for a boss 2.1 system

Although they are about 125(?) I feel the extra cost is worth it.

I just had a thought:
Is there a way to buy a wired remote separately? One with R/L out, the 5.1 ins, and possibly Optical in? I'm not even sure if someone makes one that they would sell separately. Just a thought, as it might expand my options a little.

They seem incredibly nice, but I've already spent $550 on my computer this semester (dead monitor, case that literally fell apart, DVD drive that stopped working, CPU cooler that was idling at 50c w/ a 2.4Ghz Q6600), which was about $500 more than I intended to spend - that $50 I did intend to spend on a new cooler.
So I feel that I really must enforce the $100 cap. If I can't find anything else that will suite my needs (i.e. everything I look at under $100 looks like a POS), then I'll see if I can make the numbers work.

You could but with all those conversions from optical to analog and etc will make no difference from just going analog to analog. At least i would assume so

You are referring to something like this right?

With your budget, i suggest what i mentioned above, see if you can find a frys deal or microcenter. they usually have a a set of computer speaker on sale every other day. Atleast according to the ad. As far as which one to get, whatever you feel fits, because in my opinion most $60-100 speakers from logitech or creative sounds the same, muddy bass that roll over into mids.

Well I have the z2300 from Logitech. Yeah, they're logitech. And people debate about whether or not they're worth the money. You can find a good refurb set for around $80. I have one such set, and they're amazing for the price.

Audiophiles will rant all day against people who like them... but honestly they're good for the price, and good for a basic 2.1 set.

You're going to be VERY hard pressed to find anything that's going to meet your demands under $100.

I found these Dayton's + T Amp for $58. That still leaves you needing a subwoofer for 2.1 though. $42 isn't enough for a subwoofer.

I don't think my demands are that high... I'm just looking for either a 2.1 or 5.1 that has good sound across the range.
If they are 5.1 and have optical, then great. If not, oh well.
Honestly, a separate R/L stereo input would be higher on the list now that I think about it.
