Think of it this way.

Take a cpu with 1 core i series core in it, in a program that can only use one core it will be as fast as a cpu with 20000000000000000000 core i series cores in it.

So in games that use only two cores like Crysis, a core i3 clocked the same as a core i7-9x0 will perform nearly the same. Adding more GPUs in this case will bottleneck on both chips exactly the same. The additional cores of an i7 would play no benefit whatsoever no matter how many gpus you add in a game that can only use two cores.

In a game that can use 4 cores, the core i7 can be significantly faster than the core i3, when you add more gpus this gap will grow significantly, because the additional gpu power will not provide any benefit past the point of a cpu bottleneck. If that bottleneck was reached on a single card with a i3, but not on the i7 chip, the gap will grow even greater.
Since you mentioned older games, if you run those on windows xp, due to compatibility, will the i7 have even less benefit over the i3? Because i read that i7 is much faster on 7 than xp.

why not run triple channel on the i7?

Also, your i7 looks to be unstable at those speeds. its actually dropping fps from 4.0 - 4.2ghz. maybe you should try comparing at lower more stable speeds?

Temps would be nice too.

What settings for dirt2? I get the exact same(pretty much anyways) with 11.2 at 1080p, ultra, 2xaa. With 11.4 RC2 I get Min 62-avg 72. I'm guessing 4xAA since Fermi does a bit better with Dirt2? Those are at 8xx/1100, and not my current 930/1150 though.

11.2:
<average min_fps="57.186905" av_fps="69.742577" min_fps_ms="17.486521" av_fps_ms="14.338444" />

11.4:
<average min_fps="62.897968" av_fps="72.144859" min_fps_ms="15.898765" av_fps_ms="13.861001" />

Actually I did wonder that and I did increase the voltages more (vcore from 1.2 > 1.25 for example) and run a few of those benchmarks again but the results were more or less the same. I took the highest ones from the various results, though the differences were 0.5 at most and sometimes a bit lower. It may have just been something else but you should remember that the settings were maxed out so it wouldn't be relying too much on the CPU.

Dirt 2 was set to highest. The in-built bench in that game sucks because the track isn't the best and I get similar FPS with quite a few different cards. I could just bench on another track but tbh I never really played that game apart from a few races. :/
