6 monitors on single 6870

Thread Starter
hi guys,
i need some advice (as much as possible) on connecting 6 monitors to a single ati 6870 gpu (with possible addition of a second later) let me just explain the purpose of it so that you guys can better direct me. i am in the process of building a flight training device for a new helicopter training school that i have become a partner in,
basically the first gen prototype i am starting to build for demonstrations and proof of concept will be LCD monitor based rather than the usb instruments planned for the second gen.

so i require an output for the main hd projector then 2 displays will be pilot and copilot instrument clusters (cloned) then a third for the shared temps and torque instruments and then 2 more displays for pilot and copilot foot windows.
from what ive read already i can do this on an eyefinity card with the 6 hdmi ports which at the moment is the one i am looking to buy,
however i have been offered a 6870 with all the normal connections on it,
i have read that you can use the 2 display ports to run 6 monitors but i really need to know exactly how this will work as it is not my money going on this so i need to get it right or people are going to be very upset lol.

Pretty sure you need one connector per monitor.

you can get display port adapters to 3 DVI ports...

cheapest way would be to get the card with 6 display ports...

short of that there are dvi expanders that allow you to connect 3 screens as one WIDE ass screen to one port...

it will be used with fsx or xplane basically a projector will be for the forward view so that will be a very large main view the two screens for the foot window will have views of looking down left and down right so those three will all be full fsx rendering the 3 monitors that will simulate the instruments will be copilot and pilots identical clones of relevant instruments hsi adi dme gps etc... and the single one in the centre will be the remaining instruments so they won't neccesarilly be spanned. i don't know if you've played fsx but you can basically drag and drop view windows onto the monitors.

You can also look at this 6 mini display port 5870, depending on how much you want the 6870.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102888

They should do a 6 port 6xxx series card.... No idea if one is planned though.

i don't have any flight sim friends lol.
i work in aviation this is a service i have been wanting to provide for some time we are trying to do a properly certified sim to train and certify students pilots before they get in one of our real aircraft not just a home built sim hence the need to get it right.
thankyou for the advice so far guys this was an unexpected headache i had wondered why i couldn't find a 6870 with 6 mini dp's i guess i will stick with the original 5870 with 6 ports.

As of today, I suggest you to get a card labeled as 'Eyefinity 6' to have 6-monitor Eyefinity,. I know the 5870 has such a version. Not sure about the 6870.

6870 can only do 6-monitor Eyefinity with Display Port 1.2 Hubs + daisy chaining compatible monitors. I do not think these are widely available to the market yet.
