[IGN] Sony Begins PS3 Bans - Page 5

My favorite part of the anti-hacker hate has been people who frequent tech/video gaming forum labeling a whole group of other people as socially awkward losers/virgins. Oh, the irony.

Yeah!

They need to ban Sony from sending unauthorised spam, and issuing unsubstantiated threats to people. But then again, childish actions like this will simply convince more people to just buy an XBox or Wii - where those companies aren't into sending the legal threats to modders.

And frankly - they are dealing with the wrong people. Sure, Sony might shove them off of PSN, but guaranteed, the hackers will come up with a homebrew version that will be way cooler, way more usable, and simply will not suck the big one like PSN does...

lol@fanboy
You rather they ban you without warning, or warn you and give you a chance? This is childish? And rapping trash to a company isn't?
You think a hacker will create new home brew that is , what you essentially said, better than PSN? Do you realize PSN is a network, that doesn't "suck a big one" (childish), it isn't something these "hackers" can just throw together.
Get out of here troll.

I Find this whole kerfuffle quite funny actually.
As much as I disagree with hacking, pirating, etc., just because they get banned from PSN does not mean they're going to stop playing pirated games, jailbreaking and stuff.
And as for the OtherOS feature, why not just buy a real cheap PC if you want to run linux ?

Doesn't phase legitimate players one iota. Brick their consoles.

Linux has never EVER been popular, and if you bought one of the machines that cost 500~750 when they first came out (the main consoles that supported OtherOS) just to run Linux, you are straight up retarded. Period. No discussion or gray area. If you bought it later on before they were phased out, why did you update? Everyone and their Grandmothers could go online and hear talk of OtherOS being removed. IF YOU WANT TO BE PISSED AT ANYONE, BE PISSED AT GEOHOT FOR USING OTHEROS/LINUX FOR ACCESSING L2 PROTOCOLS/INSTRUCTIONS ON THE CELL PROCESSOR USED TO CIRCUMVENT SECURITY WHICH REQUIRED SONYS IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.

OtherOS was never advertised as a main feature, but it was hyped up by a lot of tech sites just before release and there after. Its just Linux, it can run on just about anything. Even your archaic toaster.

Hacking = lame. Playing a single player game to be invincible, I have no problem with that. Using an aimbot / wall hack to ruin everyone else's game so you can feel good about a kill death ratio? Thats where your self esteem comes from? Really? Man get a college degree, maybe design a video game, do something meaningful with that life. You get off by pissing people off online in a video game? I don't even have to point out how miserably sad that is. Does it make me lame for getting upset? No, I have full right to get upset, I paid ridiculous amount of money for a good time, and some little prick has to ruin it for me and everyone. People won't stop doing it till there are serious repercussions, and in the meantime, good old fashion skilled players will always have to suffer till something is done about it.

Doing anything to circumvent encryption, security, firmware, or conduct any code modification at all is all ILLEGAL. Whether you find it, or are just using it. You violate the ToS. End of discussion. Is every hack out there for the PS3 hurts others? No. Does it mean you deserve a lifetime bricked console? Not really, but its up to Sony to deal the punishment. You do the crime, you do the time... or whatever. Stop whining about the consequences.

Pirating = illegal. Period. If you think its worth the risk, you also waive the right to whine like a baby when you get banned.

Running Snes on the PS3 is not really an issue for me as I have all the classics on the laptop. Just play your games on the PC (and yes, you can use a PS3 controller on a computer.)

Wutangrza opened his big mouth to say:
So, hey, if you're familiar with the PS3 scene you know who I am.

The consoleID is 64 hex digits long or 32 bytes. That means there are almost as many valid consoleID's as there are atoms in the universe. Looking at most consoleID's it looks like only around 24 of the digits are in use for most ID's (the rest are 0's) but even still that's 1624 = 7.92281625 × 1028, which is more than the number of stars in the entire universe.

There are only 7.5x1018 grains of sand on the entire Earth.

That means even if you tried a consoleID for every single grain of sand on the planet, you would not even have gone through 1% of all the possible consoleID's. (and this is using the conservative estimate of only 24 digits, the string is actually 64 digits long)

.00000000946633086% is the percentage of possible consoleID's you would iterate through if you picked one for every grain of sand on the Earth. So yea, good luck brute forcing dudes.

I just really hate to see all this FUD for no reason. It is mathematically impossible to iteratively ban any PS3 consoles.

Wait, what? You know that makes zero sense right? The fact that sony can offer what they offer without taking any subscription money from people (besides a few playstation plus members) is pretty impressive. No homebrew community would even be able to come close to offering that kind of functionality and it's childish to think they could.

Why is it btw that everyone assumes homebrew = godlike?

Haha, I can see it now, Sony bricks consoles using PS3 id numbers that have not been manufactured yet.

You keep trying to one up Sony, eventually, PS3 bricking will occur. No more warnings, no more chances. Poof.

I honestly don't believe that for a second. Hardware IDs are not simply software changes. Unless Sony didn't encrypt their hardware IDs or encrypted them with the same code as the signature keys (highly unlikely) - there is no way to simply do that with "information intercepts".

And, also if true, hardware IDs aren't just like 000001 and 00002 and 00003. Their random combination of letters and numbers. The chance of guessing a correct ID that someone has on their system, the hacker using it, and then getting the legit person banned is SUPER unlikely. That is the same idea as me going on my Xbox 360's JTAG and trying to guess the keychain of a legit Xbox 360 that is out there somewhere. It's almost impossible. I would have a better chance at guessing someone's credit card PIN starting with 1111 and going up from there with 1112. Unless there is a way hackers can see the hardware IDs (which is already, as I said unlikely enough to decrypt as it is) of other PSN users - then there is no way they're going to guess their ID on their own and be able to get a legit user banned.

I want to see that software from a better source, and in use before I even consider the possibility of that existing.
I think there was a reason PSX-Scene deleted their news post, because they probably got a slew of people going "boooooo - nonono"

Quote:

That's another thing too. Chances are, and it would be shocking if not true, unless the "fake" hardware ID matches the real ID of the hardware - then the console is just going to stop working. The physical ID is highly unlikely to be changed to a working ID unless the person got the physical ID from another PS3 and swapped them out. Again, it's not something you can simply make up. Unless there is no hardware check, which would be really stupid and infallible for any hardware in this day and age, then they're just going to brick themselves over.

If I'm wrong, and that software is real and works as that "article" claims - I'll eat a hat.
