I didn't know you somehow gave the movie back after you pirated it.

You need to try harder.

Six things:
1. Inflation
2. Accessibility to hardware
3. Means of distribution
4. Distribution of wealth
5. Cost of living
6. Standard of living

Sure, more companies post higher profits, but all of the above easily account for "record profits."

Removing piracy wouldn't increase sales by 1%? That is laughable, regardless of whatever flawed studies you cite. Even if in your dreamland of the only people who pirate are people who wouldn't buy things in the first place ever came to be, let me know when it's even possible to measure situations like this:
Pirate: "Hey grandma, what are you getting me for Christmas."
Grandma: "Oh, I'm not sure, Santa may bring you a new computer game."
Pirate: "No grandma, I have enough games already."
Grandma: "Oh, OK. Santa may bring you a new CD then."
Pirate: "Nah, that's OK grandma, I have enough 'CDs' already."
Grandma: "Oh? How about a nice book?"
Pirate: "No thanks grandma, I just downlo.. went downtown and got all the awesome books I wanted."
Grandma: "Ok, I'm sure Santa will find something else for you."

Piracy also removes funds from more industries than those just the publishers (IE: rentals, used sales). Not to mention, residual sales of related items/unrelated items people simply see when making a legitimate purchase.

Oh wait, I guess I shouldn't ask you to try harder because every argument justifying piracy is merely flawed logic purported as factual or true through use of a limited scope of analysis. Of course, it is pointless to argue with you considering your present position is not only based on logical fallacies, but also intentional mistruths, so I guess I'm done wasting my time with you.

PS: I never called you a pirate or associated you with the general statement that was made. YOU are the troll, as you've provided no substance for any basis or claim you've made at any point, in any manner.

Piracy = sales. It's been proven with books, music and films. I don't know about software and don't care, if piracy was such a horrible, horrible thing MS wouldn't keep posting immense profit reports. A study has been done last year, showing that if piracy was eliminated sales wouldn't increase by 1%, why do you think that is? You can desperately stand there squeezing a rock but it will never bleed.

I suppose it's too much to ask for the average troll to do even the slightest bit of research, rather than copy and paste the same lies they're fed on a daily basis.
it would not matter if sales went up just .01% theft is theft either way you look at it. just because its a small profit loss does not mean it right.

If software companies stopped charging Euro's and Dollars for their software in poor countries they'd sell more. Nobody in their right mind is going to pay three months wages for Windows, if you are of the opinion they should please come and I'll organise a lecture for you, so you can educate them.

When they've laughed you out the country for proposing they shouldn't eat for a few years just to pay for the software they need for their course you might grasp the concept that those who can buy, those who can't get their software from elsewhere.

The last time someone tried this they got laughed all the way back to Washington (Geithner), but you're welcome to try.

Its not like i agree with them overcharging the products but if i dont have the money to buy something then i just dont get it/need it bad enough.
American companies are greedy when it comes to money anyways.

I think all of us are talking about piracy in our parts of the world (North America, Europe), I have absolutely no problem with a poor kid from the third world pirating a game or Windows, God knows he at least deserve that.

I was under the impression the concept of piracy was being spewed out by some on these boards, as if them being well off was some kind of benchmark for the rest of the planet.

Now that we can have a civilised discussion I will post some links proving, once and for all, that there is a direct correlation between piracy and sales.

iPhone app
Piracy and sales - Anime
Falling CD prices, increased digital sales, yet ever dropping music sales

Rage Against the Machine proved that an artist doesn't need large corporations to make money or make it to number one. But the industry wails, gnashes their teeth and tears their hair out because it's over for them. Britney Spears generic album number 1463 isn't going to sell anymore. The future of music will either be music will be freely available or digital sales only, with the artist making their money through live shows (the way it currently works). In a lot of Eastern countries there're no copyright laws, and if they exist nobody cares but artists are still making a lot of money. That's simply because they make it through concert ticket sales.

The only proof that exists that piracy hits sales are claims by corporations. There is no scientific proof that piracy has a negative effect, there is proof that it has a positive. If this isn't proof enough then you are welcome to believe the world is flat, because the church said so. Who needs scientific proof when you actually can rely on claims?

But what if an artist want to live from it's music but doesn't want to perform in front of an audience ?

And I don't believe reports from companies at all, whether it says what I would tend to think or not, I know that pirating decrease sales because I see it in my daily lives, all my friends used to buy CDs before downloading MP3 songs became easy, now they haven't bought a CD for at least 6 years, same thing for movies, they always ask me why I still buy DVDs when I can get everything I want for free, I also had a few friends who were huge gamers and spent a considerable amount of their cash on games, now if it's at all possible they will pirate it, and only buy games on consoles where pirating is either impossible or difficult and not on PC. The worst is I'm probably the one with the less available cash most of the time.

Anyway I don't give a flying **** if EA or Activision loses money, I keep buying my games to support the devellopers and some of the publishers I like.

Do you see the world being round in your daily life? Is the world, thus flat?

If the proof I have posted isn't enough then nothing will be and the discussion has come to an end.

2 things.

If piracy were easily accessible and didn't have the repercussions of lets say playing online, you can bet many more american kids (no matter what their income level) would pirate games. This is why piracy is constantly talked about and combated by companies, so that it doesn't become mainstream. Then you would start to see major monetary losses.

As for music being compared to video games. That just doesn't work 90% of artist don't actually make the majority of their income from cd sales, most of it comes from tours and merchandise. Thus it can in no way be compared to video game piracy.
