Fan mod question.

My ammo can mod is in it's final stages, and I am trying to get rid of things I don't need, like extra wires hanging around. I have two 80mm fans on the back of the case both with a female and male molex connection to power it and I would like to get rid of them somehow. I drew a picture of the two possible solutions to it and would like to know the advantages or disadvantages to cutting the wires and wiring it up how I want. Each fan has it's own fan speed controller and I was wondering if one fan controller could control both fans? I would like to go with option 3 if it's possible. What do you guys think?

+ = molex female/molex male
crossed box = fan control

Well, you don't really need both male and female molex connectors. Pick one, cut away the other if it really bothers you. Is the fan controller passive (just a rheostat) and what is the max power? Does it provide power to the fans? I would probably go with #3 but that depends on what you have.

It's just a rheostat, yes. I haven't measured the voltage to the fans but is it safe to assume the following if I hooked them up to the same rheostat.

50% rheostat of one fan gives 50% power on one fan
50% rheostat of two fans gives 25% power on each fan?

I'm not great with assumptions, so it looks like your gonna get around 6-7v to the fans at 100%. So, powering the fans with a single molex should not be a problem (#3) as long as the fan controller is not affecting the supply.

Ammo can mod? You're modding an ammo can, and you can't make a bigger hole than 80mm?

Is there a reason for that? Or are you just re-using your Centurion fans?

I ended up using both fans rheostats. I originally got a 120mm fan, but decided it would cramp all the components needed to fit on the back of the can. With two 80mm fans that had rheostats I could equalize the push and pull pressure from the intake 120mm at 100% and the two 80's at about half power.



That's what it looks like now.

Option 3 will supply the same voltage to each fan while option 2 would multiply its required voltage x2 making them run half speed.

Option 3 can work but I would measure the current draw with a multimeter and also turn them full blast on the controller and monitor the mosfet temp increase to see if its being overworked.

With two fans in parallel as you show in #3 your doubling the current draw through the mosfet (transistor) on the controller which will increase its temperature.

As everyone saw, I just used option 2, and connected both fans to the same molex connection and used both rheostats. The space constraint wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I couldn't get one rheostat to control both or 2 in parallel. From what I saw online, it was the yellow wire that would have let me control both fans from one rheostat that I had cut off on both fans to save wire management. >_< Oops.
