Thread Starter
I have an ATI Sapphire Radeon HD 4870:

Im buying the same model with the same exact specs but the shape of it is different:

I want to make sure they will be crossfire compatible.
Thanks.

Why do companies such as ATI and Nvidia make so many different cards with the same model number??

Different people like different things.
I'm old fashioned myself.

Those egg shaped coolers are the worst looking. Yuck.

The model numbers should be a bit different, the first card you linked isn't reference and the second card you linked is a standard reference 4870.

They don't. They sell their chips to 3rd party manufacturers such as EVGA and sapphire. They also give them designs for what the PCB should look like (reference design). Those manufacturers can then use the reference design that Nvidia or ATI gave them or they can modify it as they see fit, hence why you end up with diffrent card models. Some are OCed, some have better cooling, and some are reference design stock. Different people want diffrent things.
