I thought I would take a stab at explaining this, and I ended up with some very interesting results that will probably see me chewed out by a mob of Apple fanboys, but here goes:






This is basically a long winded pseudo-scientific way of saying that since the pixels are effectively invisible on both the iPhone 4 and HTC Desire, that the Desire actually has a slightly larger effective resolution since it's screen has more surface area.

By the same token, even at 4.3", the focal limit of the HTC Desire HD is less than 8 inches, which begins to pose problems, but at a viewing distance of 1' it actually has a 35% higher effective resolution than the HTC Desire, despite the fact that the screens have the same number of pixels. Since Android scales the screen by DPI instead of resolution you can achieve that 35% by increasing the DPI in one of the config files.

To be fair there are more things to consider. The Desire has a larger screen, but it has a thinner aspect ratio, which effects browsing in landscape, although it is closer to 16:9, which means less black bars in video. The DPI is also set too low for my tastes, and I'm reluctant to S-OFF my phone to change it.

I don't know what you are talking about but I've seen an HTC Desire and the iPhone 4 side by side and it is really obvious that the iPhone 4 has the higher resolution. Don't think I'm some Apple fanboy. I hate Apple and the iPhone 4, and I own a Galaxy S which I love to death (though the screen still has a lower dpi than the iPhone 4).

There are no Android phones with a DPI that matches the iPhone 4 yet, period. This isn't based on pseudoscience or guesswork. You can easily calculate DPI if you know the size of the screen and its resolution. It isn't some kind of big secret, and DPI isn't a statistic that can be doctored by marketing, such as contrast ratio and response time can.

What you're seeing is a difference in DPI scaling.

iOS does a better job at resizing the screen and smoothing out the edges, but that has nothing to do with the actual resolution of the screen.


Here is a good example:


The iPhone 4 is on the left, 3GS on the right. You can see here that Apple effectively does nothing with the resolution. The iPhone 4 has the same effective resolution as the 3GS. Its smoother, thanks to a lot of antialiasing, but the amount of information displayed is the same.

The only difference is that you can't see the pixels in the iPhone 4 at normal viewing distance, so when you're browsing web pages you won't get pixelated text like on the 3GS, you'll just get text thats too small to read.

You can't see the pixels on the HTC Desire at normal viewing distance either, but the Desire has a slightly larger screen, so you get slightly more content (6%)

It might look a bit better because the browser scaling on Android is fairly sub-par, but thats a software thing, not a hardware thing. Put Android on the iPhone 4 and it will look the same.

That is simply wrong information. The 3GS has a 3.5" screen with a resolution of 480x320, providing for 163PPI.

The iPhone 4 also has a 3.5" screen, but with a resolution of 960x640, providing for 326PPI.

The effective resolution of the iPhone 4 is literally double that of the 3GS, and higher than any Android phone on the market. Simple as that.

For comparison to the HTC desire, it has a 3.7" screen and a resolution of 480x800, providing for 252PPI.

The effective resolution of the iPhone 4 over the HTC Desire is 29% greater. There is nothing else to it.
