i7 970 = 930 @ 4.3GHz??

I'm wondering at what clocks would the 2 be equal? I'm at 4.3 on my 930 and am looking to upgrade possibly. Only reason I don't go sandy bridge is I already have a mobo block and such.

I do video editing and the such so that is where I'd be looking to power comparison.

you will benefit from 2 extra cores.

i dont know what clocks would be equal to it.

but 930 @ 4.3ghz and 970 @ 4.3ghx = same consumptions of watts, as they both have 130 TDP.

i guess its a good time to get urself a 970 as intel slashed prices!

I would say around 3.8 - 4.0 ghz should be about the same as the 930 with two more cores kicked in.

930 @ 4.3Ghz should be faster in 80% of stuff hen stock 970.

When the two extra cores are used, a i7 970 @ stock speed could match i7 930 @ 4.3Ghz

All Nahelem and Westmere processors have nearly identical scaling per GHz. By this I mean that the 970 is no faster than a 930 at the same clock speed. It's strength lies in its ability to do 50% more tasks at a time due to the 2 extra cores.

Oh well in that case...

4.3*4=17.2 Total Ghz (930)

17.2 Ghz / 6 cores = 2.86 Ghz <--Assuming 100% scaling between cores, you hould have to clock the 970 to at least 2.86Ghz in order to match the performance of a 930 @ 4.3Ghz.

He asked. If he's only interested in doing stuff like encoding/rendering/folding then that is a perfectly valid post. Processes like that scale nearly 100% between processor cores. I am aware that it does not work like that for lesser things such as gaming or other menial tasks.
