Um yes that would be an architecture problem.

If your lappy shipped with vista 32 on it chances are your laptop is only a few years old and with that being said (depending on the chipset) you should be able to install 64bit.
Screenie of error would help though.

um...i would imagine if it didn't support 64 bit, it wouldn't even let you install it. my sisters laptop came with vista 32bit, but it is fully capable of a 64 bit OS (why it is able to run ubuntu x86_64, and 64 bit windows vista when i reinstalled on it.) the reason it didn't come with a 64 bit os when she purchased it, was due to the fact it only had 2 GB of ram (with a ram limit, no need to go to 64 bit tbh, i only put 64 bit on it, cause i couldn't find my 32 bit cd at the time.)

an error code of the bsod would help out a lot, are you able to boot into safe mode without errors?

I saw somewhere on here, someone recommended updating the bios of the Laptops Mother board. Maybe even clearing the bios can help.

I'm assuming the mobo is compatible or it probably wouldn't of let you install the 64bit, i know Linux errors when you trying install 64bit.

If your cpu isnt 64 bit, windows would not have let you continue with the setup....period. As soon as you would have clicked install, it would have told you this and you would not have been able to complete setup. That being said.....l think you are having a driver issue or conflict. It is possible that the default drivers aren't working for your laptop. Firstly, I would go to a working computer and download all the 64 bit drivers for your laptop and put them on a usb drive. Then secondly press f8 after system boot up and try to see if you can get into safe mode, if you can, install the 64 bit drivers if you are able. Hope this helps.

I would also double check your bios options as well, or like someone else had mentioned, see if you can flash/update your bios, as this may help too. Good luck!
