For hardcore sc2 machine get a dual core intel and overclock. SC2 is lightly threaded but takes advantage of higher clock speeds and performs significantly better clock for clock with intel.

For an all around gaming machine, the Phenom II X4 is a great chip. Certain games (COD:BO, BFBC2, Dragon Age, ME2, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 2) really benefit from a strong quad core with L3 cache.

The Phenom II that rabbit linked is a good deal. That on a good board (such as the 790x rabbit also linked) should clock pretty well. Only sacrifice 2mb of L3 cache and a little potential top end speed for significant cost savings which can and should be rolled into the GPU which will provide significant extra performance.

sorry you're a bit wrong here , starcraft2 utilizes 4 cores and even 6 , its very CPU intensive game , and would eat throught any dual core

very cpu intensive and very poorly threaded.

The i3 isn't such a good pick because of less l3 cache (which does improve performance in sc2), but the game is not coded to take advantage of more cores.

Also note how the i3 beats the phenom ii x4, even though it falls being the i5 and i7.

StarCraft II only takes advantage of dual cores, but still processing power plays a major role in this game. For example, the Core i3 540 processor only has half the L3 cache of the Core i5 750 and this makes the latter 27% faster when comparing the clock for clock data at 3.70GHz.
