Help with gaming Rig turned into NLE rig

Thread Starter
I just purchased a gaming rig, mostly because the hardware is all there... or so I thought. I know I should have nVidia cards for video, however, everything else was at such a reasonable price I couldn't wait...

Here is what I have..

Mobo, Asus, sabertooth x58
Dram 1600.... total 12 gigs
1 terabyte HD hitachi, system disc
2x ATE 5700 Radeon cards in crossfire..

Its a systemax Pc build...

I got 2 monitors for it that I have working off of one card (because I don't really need the other and am planning to sell both so I can get an Nvidia card that supports adobe premiere better.
Additionally, I also have 2 HD's that I purchased for video storage and cache that are the WD Caviar Black HD's, both 1 terabyte.

So now the problems start, first, I boot up the system, everything works great, load my software suite and it's all good. I install the two HD's (WD Caviar, 1TB, Sata 6Gb). At first all good. I test the system with a small video file... all good.

Next Day...Total failure?

Here is the HD setup, where the problem lies.

The original HD which is Sata 2 was in the 0 port of the Sata3 controller..
I moved it out to another port on the 6 channel intell controller.

the two NEW drives I stuck into the Sata 3 controller..(both are Sata 3 drives).
Boot up... the system is a bit confused, but it boots and everything works out. Both drives are set up.

Now it gets weird, if I transfer files to the two new drives from the first drive, it works fine.. but slows considerably as the files get bigger.?

If I try to transfer between the two new drives on the Sata3 controller, if the files are small, all is good, if they're big...total hang and then the drives disappear and...? In everything..computer, Device Manager...etc?

Once I re-boot, it's all back to normal?

Do I just need to move these to Sata 2?
Do I need to enable the jumpers for the drives for Sata 2? (They're Sata 3 drives)

I do not believe there were any benefits to SATA3 aside from straight bandwidth capabilities. As such the only reason to make SATA3 mechanical drives is for use in port multiplier RAID configurations, and for hybrid SSD/HDD setups like HyperDuo

The SATA3 ports on your board use the Marvell 9128 controller which is inferior to ICH10R in almost every case. Features and FAST SATA3 are the only advantage they have over ICH10 SATA2.

With a mechanical drive you will not be even hitting SATA2 speeds so I would use them on the ICH10 controller myself.

Still those problems indicate a failure. I would try updating the drivers. RMA might be in order.

Out of curiosity, what size files make them disappear? Anything larger than disk cache size?

I would have also thought that the cache size is causing the problem, however, it isn't. It'll start pretty quick for maybe 2 gigs of a 10 gig transfer, and then it'll get slower and slower. If I cancel the transfer, the drives get kicked of the computer.

update, I moved one of the drives to Sata II controller, it works perfect now. the other drive still has the same problems. I'm re-formating it in hopes of it clearing up. Still confused because it'll start quick and then it'll slow drastically, still perplexed??
