That's how Steam's DRM works. Thing is it's been so thoroughly pwned you have a choice between steamless releases or several different steam cracks.

This, the only things I download are old console roms and pc games that are no longer in production. It's not like the devs are losing any money since I would have to buy it off ebay or somewhere similar.
