My mother's PC

Thread Starter
So my mother is still using a Pentium D on an old Intel motherboard I used to game on back in 2006.

I'm thinking about a build with the new Sandy Bridge Intel processor, 4GB RAM minimum and an SSD for fast boot times and overall PC usage.

However, I'm not really up to date with this whole new Intel line up.

What would be a good processor for her? Something not PSU-hungry, efficient and yet at least quad-core, something like a modest i5.

I'm in doubt regarding motherboard. I'd like to buy one that offers some nic connectivity like HDMI and such. I'm not sure the variety of mobos for the new Sandy Bridge socket is that large yet.

What about SSD? Is there a nice 80GB or so one that is reliable and yet doesn't break the bank? Are the Intel ones a nice bet?

Thanks in advance.

nah mate don't go with SB yet. their HDD ports bug is driving me insane.
You can either wait for a fix or go with the x4 lineup .... assume your mother's not going to play Crysis 2 on max setting
and , CPU doesn't eat as much power as GPU though.... so if you are going with any single card setup up to the GTX480 then a 600w brand PSU should be fine

if your mom doesnt really do CPU intensive things, an i3 or an Athlon X3 or X4 is probably plenty.

the sandy bridge stuff has been pulled from retail shelves while they fix the Sata II controller.

whats the budget and main uses of the computer?

Really depends on software you need it to run.

I don't know about your mom but I know my parents would appreciate a small and low power box like this one:

In fact I may get them one soon.
