GTX 580 almost melted!!

So I have a GTX 580 and trying to use a GTX 260 as a PhysX card... Well that didn't go so well. Since some cables were coming out near the bottom of the mother board, I couldn't put the 260 further away from the 580. Instead I had to put them so close (a couple of millimeters apart) that the 260 is like covering the 580's air. Well I just started playing Crysis for about 10 minutes until the computer just turned off. When the computer started up again, I quickly looked at the temperatures and the 580 was at about 82 C. Now that had about a minute to cool while the computer was starting up so it must have been at like 90 C. I really do want to use the PhysX card but I don't want the 580 to fry! Any suggestions?

Right now the 260 is next to me so the 580 has some air right now.

Ask yourself... Is PhysX really worth frying a video card?

No my friend, no it is not.

How are the temps on the 580 now? Check to see if the fan is working properly by adjusting it with afterburner or something.

You really don't need a Physx card with a card that powerful, heck I can play batman AA with maxed physx at around 40fps on a gtx 460..

But.. that temp is normal... does it go over 105?

Hi Tom351,

Still having problems!

Max temps for your 580 is around 97 - 100 *C so you may be gtting a over heating issue from the CPU or PSU as well.

What temp was the CPU at?

Ouch that was lucky.

As far as solutions go I would say if you cant use the PCI-e slots at the bottom or the 3rd one down the you may have to try one of those crazy PCI-e ribbons.

I will have a look for a pic.

It looks like this but it is shielded.

This is better

Then the real hard bit of where to put the card.

I have an Intel i7 950. Do I enable PhysX on the CPU or the 580?

The 580 - it will be more than enough to handle all games

PhysX is a feature that's on cards, you just enable it in games that support it.
