He stated he wanted GbE throughout which is why I helped find a GbE switch, that being said CAT6 is fine.
yes but Cat7/Cat6 can be cut and have connectors put on by anyone and can have tighter bends. fiber requires exact lengths or a professional to cut it and terminate and also requires gentle bends to work properly.

That said I think he is fine with the Cat 6 for 1GbE and 10GbE in the future (very few people runs more than 165 feet in a house before it meets the next device)

Hey, fellas! I appreciate your concern about my CAT6 wiring, but it's already in place and I'm not going to change anything about it in the near future. My OP stated that I was looking for a Gigabit Switch and Router, and this thread slid off topic completely....

What type of connection/service do you have coming in Fios, Cable, DSL, T1, E1?

You said you were looking for a switch. Do you need a router also? What is your over all budget?

Do you need PoE? In other words are you installing VoIP, which is what PoE is used for 90% of the time?

I gave you 2 Cisco recommended switches, both GbE, with 10GbE backplane. One was managed the other was unmanaged. The managed switch will always cost more. If you need them again here...just search for the model numbers

unmanaged Cisco SR2016T newegg price $179.99
managed Cisco SLM2016T newegg price $269.99

Hey, mate! I got Cable service at about 28mb/s down (docsis 2.0). I also need a wireless router with N-wireless and Gigabit, and I was looking at Buffalo routers capable of running DD-WRT, do you know anything about them? PoE is not a must, but I could probably use it for a Cisco AP that's laying around somewhere. What are managed switches genneraly used for, what kind of operations? My budget is expendable to $300-350. thanks!

managed switches are used when you need to have advanced configurations on a switch.

Some of the most common are:
Advanced VLAN assignment per port
Aggregation of switch ports
QoS per port, a must for VoIP installations

Managed switches are pretty advanced compared to the typical home use unmanaged switch. If you are wanting or needing a managed switch I would recommend picking up the Cisco Press CCNP BCMSN book. You would primarily need to focus on chapters 3, 4, 5, 7, 15, 16, and 17. If you need VoIP then read chapter 14 also.

Dave does a pretty good job at going through the in's and out's. I thought Kennedy was going to write the new version, but he was too busy with a project we were working on.

And before some smart ass remarks, yes I know them and used to work with Kennedy Clark for about a year.

*EDIT*
As for the Buffalo routers, I couldn't really tell you. My specialty is with Cisco, Juniper, Brocade (formerly Foundry Networks), and F5.
