Athlon II X3 435 Unlock Issues

Thread Starter
I'm a newb and I tried searching and could not find this scenario. Anyway I have an Athlon II X3 435 that I have been trying to unlock. My board is an Asus M4A78LT-M with 0802 Bios. Windows 7 64bit.

I enabled ACC and unleashing mode, save and exit, says 4 cores are unlocked then freezes on windows boot. I disabled cool n quiet. I upped the voltage and still to no avail. So then I go back into the bios and look at the settings and it shows the L3 cache, so i'm like sweet might as well have a Phenom II X3. But it still freezes at windows boot, it gets further than with 4 cores enabled, it actually gets to where the swirling stops at boot screen and hangs there. I also tried disabling 3rd core enabling 4th core and any combination possible to leave 3 core enabled and still no boot. So i tried it with 2 cores enabled and then windows boots fine, CPU-Z shows Phenom II X4 B35 with L3 cache, but only 2 cores of course. It also works with only 1 core and L3 cache.

Is there something I'm forgetting to do; or am I stuck with a choice between Phenom II X2 and Athlon II X3?headscratch.gif

you cant unlock the extra cores in all cpus sometimes there locked because the 4th core is dead/or unstable this may be your issue, your pc is trying to send data through a core that it sees but isnt working properly, anyway good luck but i hope this helps

When I tried to unlock the extra core on my Sempron 140, it didn't work and had the exact symptoms you described. It would post after several more seconds of thinking, and then freeze when you tried to boot it. Unlocking my Athlon II X3 worked fine. But yeah, sounds to me like you have a chip that won't unlock. Sorry, sucks when that happens. :\\

In most cases, the triple-core will be a bit faster.

Perhaps it just doesn't want to unlock. I don't recommend adding any more voltage on that board, it is a cheap 3+1 VRM.

You're always scaring me with the thing about 3+1 power phase. I'm so close to going out and buying a mobo with 8+2, just to be safe.

I can't help myself, there seems to be a huge wave of VRM failures happening lately with everything - I'm not just talking AMD, in two consecutive days an Intel VRM system then an nVidia card VRM system took blows. Must be most components are starting to reach their lifetime?
Perhaps that is what's going on. I've only had my mobo for 2 months now...

But if I were to buy a better one to be safe, what would you recommend? I'm on a budget, so I'd like it to be <$75. Thanks.
