When someone pops a balloon behind you, does it take 5.1 for your 2 ears to locate sound coming from behind, no, your brain does the work for you.

Nature has given humans the perfect surround sound system, your brain, learn to use it.

Head-related transfer functions. Once you learn the basics, it's very much, the more you found out, the more you dunno

Auditory Illusions
binaural recordings do not apply to why stereo headphones are better than 5.1. It's really 'cheating' the argument as binaural recordings are made specifically for stereo headphones.

Anyway: 5.1 'true surround' headphones are poor due to lower sound quality for the money due to the sue of lower quality smaller drivers. Also to cut coasts, they are often of much lower quality build quality wise as well. It is much better value for money to get a stereo headphone + a soundcard that has surround sound emulation as you get far better sound quality but don't sacrifice the emulation of surround sound when required.

If he doesn't want take take our advice, so be it. His decision won't affect us, and all that matters is if you know that you have a superior audio setup. if he won't believe us, let him think that his crap sounds good.
