UK broadband providers...

Thread Starter
Switched from British Crappycom recently while still using the same line (which is not so good, and only capable of up to 16MB speed apparently).

I used to pay £17 for an "up to 8MB" connection from them, best speed I ever got from them (download real world speed) was 760KB/s but this would get throttled down to 300KB/s or even 50KB/s sometimes. My dad's got Virgin Media fiber optic broadband who are also crap (1.2MB download max speed, but they throttle his download speed after he gets past his 4GB or so download limit or when he uses it during peak times to a pathetic 200KB/s) and he pays for one of those "jack of all trades" connections including TV and a worthless landline.

Only got my broadband set up on Wednesday and did a little test of real world speed today. Downloaded a crap load of games I had bought ages ago during Christmas Steam sales.

Not bad at all for £14 a month. The speed seems to only dip for a few seconds but then goes back up to average (1.3MB/s download) and has today spiked up to 7MB real-world speed , which I thought was totally random (but so awesome lol). And with the amount of stuff I downloaded today alone, I would've had through the roof bills had I been on most of these one size fits all providers with download limits, or otherwise throttled down ages ago had I been on the other crap providers I mentioned above.

I know there's another thread already there about speed tests and stuff but I wanted to ask other boradband users from UK and the speeds/download limits you have as well as the cost of them, as there's a massive difference between say, average US/Europe broadband speeds and UK. What sort of broadband package are you on and how much are you paying for it (also do you get throttled down at peak times)?

P.S. downloaded about 40GBs of stuff yesterday as well. No throttling yet.

It's actual MB. It was like that for about 10mins, then went back down to 1.3 Megabytes (I think) per second. No idea why or how though.

Here's a speed test as well.

Its Mbps not MB as 1MB/s = 8Mbps

Hehe nice.

And yeah, I know speedtest isn't accurate. But Steam does seem to spike to 7Megabytes, not Megabits, as it's a real world speed indicator unlike speed test. Maybe their routers get rebooted or something before the bandwidth limit kicks in.

EDIT: dropped to 100KB/s for about 3 mins, now back up to full speed (1.3MBps).

What sort of real world download speeds do you get and how much?

I can assure you it didn't actually reach those speeds. Steam misreads the download speed often - its better to ignore what it says.

BE are great, I've been with them for a few years now. If anything ever goes wrong you post on the forum and get a response straight away, really good customer service.

Usually get around 12-14Mb/s, sync around 12000-16000kbps. £18 a month, 6db, fastpath on.

Unlucky man. I was with their "Unlimited" crap for a while, they didn't even bother to send us the Home Hub which we were supposed to get when we moved up to Unlimited broadband. Never going back to them now, if I move house, I'm getting a phone line from BE (though it's usually BT's line) I don't trust BT with my money.
