Second 5870 or 6950

Thread Starter
So in about a week I am going to buy 2 more monitors to hit up some eyefinity action (also interested for the extra desk space for work, so its worth it to me) I doubt a single 5870 is going to be able to handle 3 1920x1080 monitors. I had been saying I am going to buy a used 5870 and xfire, but now I am doubting myself thinking perhaps I should sell my 5870 and pickup a 6950, now keep in mind, I will not be xfiring the 6950 any time soon, I wouldnt even think about it for another year at least, but probably more. Which would be a better choice, 5870x2 or a single 6950?

Two 5870's would be a lot faster and a much better choice.

2x HD5870's would be slightly faster than a HD5970. So as you can see, it's a lot faster.

But would that apply the same to eyefinity, with a higher amount of ram needed?

Ram only really makes a big difference in AA and AF are applied i believe. someone correct me if im wrong the power of the two 5870 will out weigh the lack of ram

True, but if you turn up the AA in some games, 1gb vram cards will get choked and once that happens there's nothing you can do except back down the AA. At eyefinity resolutions, this will be more relevant.

Nice, though correct me if I am wrong, but from my experience, I dont really notice the effects of AA and 1920x1080, at lower res I used to, but I can barely see the difference between x2 & x8 at 1080

As someone already pointed out, the sheer power that 2x 5870's would have over a single 6950 will outweigh any RAM benefits the 6950 has

^^If you really don't notice the jaggies then you may not need the extra vram.

afaik RAM limits the system on texture-heavy apps (since textures are stored in gpu ram)

Having said that, 5870 xfire wins in terms or performance AND price, as there are lots of great deals on those cards right now. You only lose on the future upgrade path (which TS says shouldnt matter for now anyway) and some improved features like tesselation, etc.

Bottom line: i'd go with xfire.

With 2 5870's I would think you would still be able to apply some AA?
But yeah 2 5870's is much more powerful. Im in the same boat in terms of video upgrade.
