If you hit a point where there's no more vram, you can't do jack about it. Turning AA on will on some games put you into this situation. Metro, Crysis/ Crysis2, F1 2010 at eyefinity will do this.

So i guess it boils down to what the TS needs/wants:

More fps at the cost of lower/limited AA: go xfire 5870
Richer graphics at less fps: 6950

Yeah, I think the 5870 crossfire is the right choice, it will push my PSU to the limit, but should be good. Thanks everyone, now to find a good deal on a 5870

Here's a good example in F1 2010:

We have an apples-to-apples test below that shows the GTX 580 at 8X MSAA in comparison to the AMD video cards. What we found, is that performance seemed to chug just as if we were running out of memory capacity with 8X MSAA enabled. When we dropped the GTX 580 SLI to 4X AA performance smoothed out and the game was playable. Even at 4X AA though, GTX 580 SLI is still running behind 6970 CrossFireX running at a higher 8X MSAA setting.

The most disappointing combination for this game was GeForce GTX 570 SLI. We tried playing at 5760x1200 8X MSAA, 4X AA and 2X AA as well as No AA, and just did not experience fast enough performance to enjoy the game. At 8X MSAA the game was a slide show, we are talking less than 10 FPS, typically around 5 FPS, and yes we have an apples-to-apples to show that. At 4X AA the chugging wasn’t as bad, but performance was still well under 30 FPS. Even at 2X AA and No AA, performance was not up to the level that we needed, averaging around 40 FPS for this game. We found we had to drop the game down to 5040x1050 with No AA in order to get acceptable performance. This is clearly a huge loss in visual quality compared to 5760x1200 with AA enabled.

How is the 6950 richer graphics? It is not.

The 5870 Crossfire will beat the single 6950 in every single category.

Look at any of the benchmarks where a 6950 is vs the 5970, even on Eyefinity, you can tell the 5970 is ahead of it

I have to be honest, now that I have my eyefinity setup, I set AA to x2 or even none, and frankly I havent really noticed a difference. I think I am a believer that at 1920x1080, AA isnt really that important, the resolution is high enough that "jaggies" dont really exist, and cutting AA down saved my frame rate, I probably will hold off on crossfire until I play a game where I cant play on high at a respectable FPS. Thanks again for everyone's help

Agreed, get a second 5870.
I got my second just a week ago for a bargain price of 200 bucks. Never looked back!

Stupid n00b question here: Do you have to have the same brand 5870's to crossfire?

I play at 1680x1050 res and honestly, i see a big difference between 0 AA and 2x AA, but not a considerable difference between 2x and 4x. 2x AA takes enough of the jaggies out to make me happy. I guess its a preference thing.
