Looking for a replacement SSD

Thread Starter
I recently purchased the OCZ Vertex 2 60GB from Newegg and then ended up returning just yesterday as I was not satisfied with the reduced performance brought out by the new 25nm fabrication process. My drive was confirmed to be a 25nm model as it came preloaded with the 1.28 firmware. I spoke with a member of management yesterday and they agreed to take back my drive and offered a full refund once they received the drive (shipping costs and the restocking fee were waived as well).

With that being said, I am currently looking at purchasing another SSD drive. I'm currently looking at the 80gb Intel X25m model and the 64gb Crucial C300. Which would you guys recommend? I understand that there are going to be a bunch of new SSDs releasing in the following months but I don't believe its worthy to upgrade to those as my motherboard only supports up to SATA 2 3GB/s. Any help would be much appreciated.

Care to elaborate on that? Why not the Intel X25?

Thanks.

I have not tried the Intel. I usually look at Passmark to see how they rank them in benchmarking, but the SSDSA2MH080G2K5 is not on the list.

I am getting around 325 MB/s read speeds when I hook it into SATA 6.0. When I use SATA 3.0, the speed goes down too 225 MB/s. Of course, it is a little slower than advertised.

Since the Intel is SATA 3.0, I am not sure that it would be faster. To be completely honest, I have yet to figure out why mine is faster on 6.0. It makes no sense because 225 MB/s is a far cry away from the max bandwidth a SATA 3.0 can handle.

Save 50 bucks and get the C300. The speed variance is probably very marginal between the two of them, but the C300 should smoke the intel if it is on SATA 6.0.

EDIT: Maybe down the road, you can upgrade to SATA 6.0.

How do you mean "reduced performace" like what is the stated write/read rates on that drive?

I recently had this Vertex 2 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/225415 and thought I would try a C300 as I have 6gbs Sata

The Vertex2 I must say slightly pipped the C300 in boot times and general PC usage and slaughters the C300 when installing programs....

Just looked at the intel stated speeds and Definitely think the C300 will be faster on Sata 3 and cost less. And if u ever get a 6gbs board you will get the extra bit of speed from the C300 read rate. Think I would even get the 128gb C300 for the quicker write speeds. They may hopefully come down in price when the C400 comes out, Looking at reviews on the C400 they are only going to be 17% faster than the C300 and as far as I think that speed difference wont even be noticable.....like opening a program instantly is opening a program instantly, like the C300 and Vertex 2 already do!

Read about the whole OCZ 25nm fiasco here -> http://www.overclock.net/ssd/942073-...nd-versus.html

OCZ rates my drive as 285 mb/s read and 275 mb/s write. The problem is that they used ATTO to get those numbers. If you were to use AS SSD or Crystalmark you would get much lower numbers. I had like 170 mb/s read and 30 mb/s write in both AS SSD and Crystalmark. A simple google search revealed that the older 34nm Vertex 2 drives were able to achieve around 200 mb/s read and 60 mb/s write in both of those tests. So now you can see why I was so upset, the older drives were like 30% faster than what I had.

Sort of see what you mean but heres a C300 Atto I just did, I cant find my old Vertex two ones which Im sure were the same as the one you returned. The vertex2 on and after the 128.0 in test was on and just over 250 for writes and 265 ish for reads. And having used both the Vertex and C300 I think all in all unless you are getting a C300 128GB and a 6gbs mobo, you should stick with the Vertex...

As I mentioned in my original post, I ended up returning Vertex 2 drive back to Newegg for a 100% refund. As of now, I am torn between the 80gb X25 and the 64gb C300. The C300 is a tad bit faster than the X25 but there are reports of people experiencing problems with the latest 0006(?) firmware. A friend of mine bought the X25 last summer and he has not had any problems with it to this date.

Think you should phone OCZ and get them to send the Vertex back!

Here are two tests I did one with my vertex 2 doing Avast quick scan, the other just now with the C300 it takes twice as long, despite it's so called quicker read in bench tests, the system is pretty much identical, infact there is about 3gb less of programs on then was on the Vertex2...

Vertex2 22 seconds

C300 45 seconds

The benchmarks on the link you provided earlier were done in IDE mode....

Also a snapshot of AS SSD benchmark on c300 I just did. My vertex 2 score was 260, the c300 560, but is slower to scan a system...so do these benchmarks really mean much? Seem like WEI to me...
