First build [new to customs]

Thread Starter
Hello everyone @ OCN! Okay, if there exists a topic about the same, please redirect me to the said topic as I couldn't find any such topic. Thank you!

I wanted to know if I should buy/build one now or wait a while?
I know 2011 is going to see a lot of advancements in terms of technology... Lightpeak, Sandy Bridge, cheaper SSD, UEFI, better gfx, cpu, <insert new technology here>, etc. Taking that into consideration what should I do? Are there any of them worth waiting for?

Secondly, should I buy a new more powerful laptop or should I go for a PC?
A laptop can be plugged into a TV via HDMI and all that. I need a laptop because of college, etc. So if I make a PC, I will be stuck with this old laptop and if I buy a new laptop... well, no PC.

  • CPU: Intel/AMD... doesn't matter.
  • GPU: AMD/Nvidia... doesn't matter.

Budget:
  • 1,770 USD

What I am looking for:
  • Moderate to Serious gaming. [Dirt3, Battlefield Bad Company 3, CoDBO, Mass Effect 3, etc.]
  • Multiprocessing.
  • HD Movies, audio.
  • Recording/processing audio.
  • processing video.
If someone has a good configuration in mind, do let me know.

If you already have a laptop don't get another one. High powered laptops have crappy battery life and aren't nearly as powerful as a less expensive desktop. It's the worst of both worlds, except you can kind of move it around.

In terms of waiting, would definitely wait for sandy bridge rerelease or bulldozer with that budget.

yee, been getting sick of them laptops. I was thinking of a Powerful Desktop + Cheap Netbook.

Anyway, so what would be the

best CPU for my needs? Quad-core/Hexa-core

How much RAM ? 6GB?

What would be the best Motherboard? (so that everything is compatible)

What is the best 1 GB Graphic Card around at the moment? I intend to make my PC work for at least another 4 years with little upgrade over the years.

As for the case and the cooing solution, that all depends on what you want to get and use. This build excluding case and cooling system comes out to $1400 USD. This still leave you room for a cooler, case, and netbook. Let me know what you think.
