Heatsink lapping

Alright, I have a Prolimatech Armageddon cpu cooler that I would like to lap flat. This cooler base has somewhat of an intentional arch to it as well does my i7920 so this has to be hindering some cooling performance. The question is what would be the best way on lapping this cooler without potentially making it worse because of the arch or slight bow in the base..?? Any pointers, suggestions, or thoughts before I undertake this project..??


Another thing that I thought about would be to keep track of temps before and after.. but not sure how accurate it would be..??

lay the sandpaper on a flat surface , sticky tape it down ... rub the cpu evenly up and down on the sand paper until it becomes flatt .. use multiple grits of sandpaper

same goes for the block ..

you have to be really brainless to stuff something up , u wil like results . goodluck

Get some 600, 800, 1200, and 2000 grit sandpaper. Get a really smooth surface (like a flat piece of glass, or metal). It has to be the flattest thing you can find. Tape the sandpaper to the flat surface. Start with the 400 grit paper. Make a few strokes one direction, and then rotate it 90 degrees, and do the same. Keep repeating. After a while, switch to the 600 grit, and keep going up. I've heard some people put a dab of mineral oil on the sandpaper.

I have lapped before but my concern is the high spotspot in the heatsink base. A back and forth motion could make the high spot worse. I got some 400, 800, and 1000 grit as that is kinda the option I had tonight. Been lightly lapping the heatsink but it is not easy getting that centered high spot out.

isn't this deliberately down? the arch shape to it....

its done so the TIM can fill in the arch isn't it?

It takes quiet a bit of time to lap cpu's and heatskinks (hours). Just take your time and it will come out, I sugguest using the 400 grit until it starts to get flat then start changing grits. Also for a nice mirror polish dont use water on the 1000 grit and dont clean it off(the sand paper). The metal on metal rubbing will make a mirror shine.

From what I understand the high spot is intentionally machined into the base because supposidly most cpu heatspreaders are concave... but my cpu is not that way. I feel this cooler has more to offer as it seems only 2 of the 6 heatpipes are doing the majority of cooling. My goal is 4.5ghz with temps under 80c in Linx and IBT stress testing.

you do know that your having VERY VERY high expectations of a HSF for a i7 950 at 4.5 >80*C......

and how do YOU know that your cooler is only using 2 of its heat pipes to its fullest?

you'll need quite low ambients+good fans to get below 80*C at 4.5ghz
what kind of voltage are you using at 4.2ghz?
IMO, not worth it to lap your HSF and chip...cause i say you have quite a low chance of achieving your >80*C goal unless you go WC

again, thats just my opinion so you don't end up wasting your time and voiding your warranty
let us know (proof) if you do manage!

Yeah, 4.5ghz with HT On would not be likely with air cooling (less than 80c) but I'm shooting for 4.5ghz with HT off with max temps under 80c. This is plausible for me but I will provide proof on how close I get.

I assume two of the heatpipes are doing the majority of the work since it is where the contact is being made. With better contact between the cpu and heatsink it should help a few degrees C* atleast.
