Yeah the original idea to use this for the donor parts came from the fact that it would be fairly difficult to fit a tuner card and a GPU in the case. They would both have to have been half height which is never fun.

Instead of doing any mocking up I ended up playing with the CRT for a bit.
I wasn't so sure about how to open it up safely but then I found THIS and decided to just go for it.

I should have taken some pictures from the beginning but I was having too much fun. I had already smashed it up a fair bit by now.

It had this mesh stuff that I assume the black magic interacts with somehow to make the pictures. Best not to question.

After hacking at it unsuccessfully with wire snips for a bit I realised I could pry the whole frame out instead.

And then I was left with this. The white stuff is some sort of sticky powder, I assume phosphor.

By now I was excited because the glass actually was clear! Hooray.

I rubbed at it for a while with paper towels and water before windex did an unsurprisingly good job at cleaning it. I managed to be surprised somehow, even though it is glass.

It was still crazily sharp around the edges at this point so I carefully hammered at it ... with a hammer. I should have just been more careful and waited till I had a dremel because I cracked it.

Then again, I don't really mind because it seems to fit with the old looks of the TV. So let's just pretend that I did it on purpose.

There is still a lot of jagged glass that needs to be removed from it before I will be happy. Ideally it would be down to near the silver/grey band to save on some space near the front.

I'm hoping that a dremel or generic variant thereof will be able to cut through glass this thick without cracking it further.

So how about it? Would a cheap generic rotary tool be able to cut through this all the way around?

OH NO! to bad you cracked the screen. A bit of a set back.
Nice work though, this is a very brave project your working on here.
Also i found this on cutting glass, its a lame video of a guy cutting glass sheets. It should work for your screen too. Hope this helps:

If this vid isn't what your looking for, just follow the youtube chain. There are alot of video's

Yeah it sucks but as I said I think that in the end it will look like I meant to do it.
Thanks for the link, +rep for you.
I was going to just go ahead and try without researching otherwise. Not the best idea.

I found this video that might work for me. The glass in the screen is about 2x thicker than a wine bottle so it might not work as cleanly. But even if it ends up a bit ragged I can just sand it down after.

I think I will head to the hardware store right now to see if I can buy a glass cutter. The trouble is that my job somehow forgot to pay me the last two pay periods and I only found out when I couldn't buy something earlier using my atm card. I transferred some money from my savings account but that takes a few hours and by then the hardware store will be closed. I have $20 in my wallet right now so let's just hope that the cutter costs less than that and that my car will make it to the store and back even though the fuel gauge is hovering on the empty line. Should be fun!

Thanks

But as I was walking out the door I saw that a huge pile of parts had arrived! Awesome!

I decided to wait until tomorrow to go buy the glass cutter so instead I made a bunch of cardboard mockups to test some layouts.

I was surprised to find that my 9800 GTX mock up fits, just. I have been thinking about buying a half height card anyway because this doesn't need to be a very powerful computer so there should be plenty of room.

The PSU is right behind the mobo here. The GPU is pretty close to where the screen would be and the mobo is right up against the PSU but there is at least 3-4 cm that the PSU could move back once I cut some mounting tabs out of the way. So no problem there.

Here is where I plan to put the HDD rack. Just imagine another HDD above this one.

I will put a fan here where the speaker used to be. Pretty damn cool there there is already a hole cut right where I would be wanting to cut one anyway.

The ODD doesn't fit quite as well as I had hoped because there is a mounting tab for the screen right where I wanted to put it. I think I could just cut it off and let the screen stay in place using the other 3. The roof of the shell is pretty uneven so it is hard for the drive to sit level unless it is a few centimeters from the top.

So there are 3 different ways I could mount it:
1. Ejecting out the top

2. Ejecting out the right, vertical

3. Ejecting out the right, horizontal

What do we think?
I am liking the first right now because it would be the easy to stealth (same as 2) but it doesn't stick out into the screen as much as 2 and 3 do.

I have some decent progress to show you guys but my main computers hard drive just failed pretty catastrophically. No bsod or anything, just an epic freeze then nothing. I let the windows thing try to fix it after I restarted but it ran for a few hours then froze on boot. I'm recovering everything not backed up right now with knoppix. I used an ubuntu live disk at first but it couldn't read anything on the drive, knoppix is managing to copy but very slowly.

I don't have Photoshop on any of the other computers and gimp is really frustrating to work with canon raw. You have to process each image individually which takes forever. So no update for now.
I guess I'm in the market for a few new hard drives, 3x spinpoint F1's perhaps?. Damn seagate barracuda 7200.12, it has treated me well for a year and a half only to fail without any warning.

This has turned out to be a really terrible week for hard drives.
I ended up losing my OS drive and both of my backup drives as well. The OS drive is completely bricked but I had it doubly backed up. One of those backup drives seems to be a hardware problem with tons of unreadable sectors. The other seems to be a firmware issue.
It is a WD caviar green 1tb (WD10EAVS) that is showing up in BIOS and disk management as 32mb. Windows reports that there is no recognizable file structure. Very annoying. Especially because WD apparently doesn't believe in providing firmware for download. I'm running a few recovery programs right now while I'm at uni so hopefully it turns out alright.

On the mod front I have done these things:
-Cut out PSU and ODD openings
-Made PSU mounting tabs
-Cut down and smoothed out the screen ready for mounting
-Designed and mocked up HDD and ODD racks

Just so everyone knows this isn't completely dead, just postponed.

My landlord decided that he wanted to move into our apartment we were renting so we had a month to move out. We found a place but it was only available 2 weeks after our lease ended so my girlfriend and I had to move into my parents house until it was available. Then it turned out the new place was suddenly only available for 3 months so we are going to have to move AGAIN. Man what a crazy time with so much moving.

So for now I can't work on the tv because I just don't have the space, not to mention having a 2 hour drive to uni now which cuts down on time as well. Just hang tight and give me a month to get my act together and I will have this finished in no time.
