phenom II x4 940 asus m3a78-em OC

Decided I need to pump this thing up a bit. I keep running into BSOD memory dump when raising the FSB. How can I bump this up without effecting the memory speed? I have it stable at 205 x 17.5. I'm at work so I cant post everything at the moment.

You've got a black edition CPU. Just use the unlocked multiplier to overclock it.

Yes, thats what I've done but won't i get better performance from a higher FSB and a lower multiplier? Its running 3.6ghz now.

yes you would benefit more than a bumped fsb but you can always mix the two, like 20x240 for instance(4.6 + lower latency on the NB)set the memory speed bus one notch lower and your good to go.though overclocking isnt a guaranteed thing.
what cooler are you using on the cpu?
you may need up to 1.5v if your using a weak cooler though.

Thanks! I have an aftermarket one on there with some arctic silver not sure what model it is. I'll try setting it to 333 and see what happens when i get home.

This is a misconception that dates from the Athlon XP and Core2Duo days. Back then the FSB frequency was a measure of the speed of transfer between the CPU and the NB. This was very important since the memory was linked to the NB, thus when the processor needed something from the memory it had to access it thru the FSB. The FSB of the C2D for example was quad pumped, which means it had a fixed multiplier of 4x. The only way to raise the total FSB speed was to raise it from 200 to whatever was stable, which improved performance.
For any AMD since 2003 and Intel since 2008 the memory controller was moved on the CPU. For Phenom-s this linked is called HT (not fsb) and it can be tweaked in two ways: by raising the base clock (like the fsb days) or by changing the HT multiplier (was fixed @4x for the fsb). As you may know in order to successfully OC a processor you should keep HT speed at or below stock speed by dropping the HT multi if the HT base clock was raised (as you did from 200 to 205). Also HT is a number of times faster than FSB was, while the CPUs aren't; as such base HT speed is more than enough not to bottleneck any OC you may manage to reach.

For these reasons HT overclocking for any recent CPU is pointless. It stresses the motherboard as it must work outside the specs (like in the FSB days) with no gain of performance. Since you can OC by multiplier, you should prefer this alternative. Multi OCing is pretty coarse, you can raise in 100MHz steps (0.5x), so if you reach the limit (stable @3.7GHz, unstable @3.8) but the CPU may be stable @3.75 you need to OC using the HT to get there.

OCCT is my favorite. An OCCT stable CPU is as stable as you're gonna need for 24/7 desktop. Other folks use wPrime or LinX that are much more CPU intensive and would guarantee stability under server workloads. They also heat up the CPU much more and stress the mobo a lot more, which I personally think it's overkill.

125W + 4+1 phase unheatsinked! Especially with whatever 480W PSU you have I really don't think overclocking is such a good idea at all...
Drago,i may have misread your post, but i think the ht=fsb bit misleading? bus speed and ht link are seperate(or they are at least in the bios i use).
So yes you try to keep HT link close to 2000 as possible but get the fsb high as possible to lower the latency in the NB which of course equates to tighter response across the board.

I would go for a hefty NB overclock over outright cpu speed personally as it seems to be more of a real world difference.

though with an unlocked multi it would be rude to take advantage of the available speed.

i got 4.14 CPU/3.6 NB last night before temps got the better of me and i have to say if its just for benching then sure go for the highest cpu clock but if its for a better performance all round then higher NB clock seems to be the way forward for me.
just my 2pence.
