it didnt sell because its not Call of Duty: Dead Space 2. Trust me, if that were the name it would have broken records. To me it seems that just having a popular name can make sales, I mean, launch day is all that matters right?
Halo:ODST(x360) 5+ million sold. not exactly worth $60. not even new multiplayer!
Halo:Reach(x360) 8+ million sold. alot better than ODST but not exactly what I call a block buster type game, but it sold like one.
Mirrors Edge 2.2 million(x360 + ps3),
Dead Space (x360 + ps3) 2.65 million
Dead Space 2 (x360 + ps3) 1.08 million
this is sad, unique and fresh games are treated as bargain bin games.
just look at the CoD titles since part 4 which was great.
x360,ps3,DS) 15.08 million
CoD: WaW (x360,ps3,ps2,wii,DS) 14.99 million
CoD: MW2 (x360 + ps3) 21.35 Million
CoD: BO (x360,wii,ps3,pc,DS) 21.38 Million
All CoD before CoD4
14.41 million. I think the CoD series is making a stab a dethroning Mario. their at 87 million right now, if the keep up the rate they will release another record setting game later this year. Great for them but what does that mean for games like Dead Space? Great and fun? Yes and Yes, lower budgets? Hell Yea. People could go crazy and spend $200 million on the next CoD and feel pretty good that it will sell. Can they sink even $40 million into dead space 3? probably not, since, and i am doing a very generous calculation here, say the developers get $40 a unit sold(they might make more, not sure) that means dead space has generated about $40 million. Halo 3 cost $55 million in production and $200 million + in marketing. I guess economics really does affect everyone, except CoD.
as you can see, if they were to release Call of Duty: Barbie Edition it would sell atleast 10 million before people would notice. I dont think people buy games, they buy names. They treat this like clothes.
