Load temps are where it counts, what are they? And what is your ambient?

the truth

A2: Yup, half-turn on each screw until both stopped.

Q3: How is the airflow in your case?
A3: Well, its the HAF932, I assume that means its good?

Q4: How are the ambient temps in your room?
A4: Right now the temperature outside is 21C, and the window is open. I don't have a thermometer to check what the temp is inside my room.

Q5: What are your load temps?
A5: Around 61C

everything sounds fine. idle temps arent a big deal as long as they arent rediculous. on air cooling you could see a 20*C change from load to idle like 40 to 60*C and thats perfectly normal. if you were seeing less of a change and still getting 60ish load temps, then you would only be dropping down to 50 or so at idle, that would be cause for concern.

39-40*C is fine for an i7 at idle.

if you have voltage on auto, CPU can have bigger voltage in load than it needs.
for example mine x6 1055T all on auto, voltage bumps to 1.5V when turbo kicks in and OC goes to 3300 (all x6 are like this)

but with manual OC it only needs 1.395 to OC 3965Mhz

Sorry for bumping the thread, but I figured its better than opening a new one.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the coverage Im getting... I'm putting a small dab in the middle and pushing down. Should I apply it differently? More or less TIM?

Maybe the interior case temp is high.
Use hardware thermometer to see what "true" mb temp is inside case.

Put this at a dead air space inside case & see.
In order for cpu to keep cool...case interior needs to be cool.

Yea, what are your ambient temps? If you're in the middle of a desert, it's obviously gonna be hotter than someone OCing in Alaska.

Also 61c load isn't bad. You have a bit of room to overclock with that.

Am I to assume by your replies that my TIM application is fine?

I'll have to buy a thermometer, and when I do I'll get back to you on my ambient temps. Right now I'm assuming they're somewhere around 26-7C.

I've played around a bit...

First, I've re-seated the Noctua. Used a small rice-grain amount of TIM. With the computer on its side and the side-doors closed, I was getting 35C idle and 55C load. I loaded up furmark to test the CPU and the GPUs together, and the CPU was at 60C. The GPUs were at 70C.

I thought, great! I put the computer back on its feet and wheeled it to its original position. I turned on the PC and the idle temps were back at 42C. I loaded up Prime and load test were at 60C. I didn't load up Furmark this time around.

I wondered what my temps would be like after an overclock. I followed this guide to overclock to 3.8. I loaded up Prime and tested for an hour... my load temps stabilized at 65-67C (maximum reported by RealTemp was 69C). My idle temps, however, are around 45-47C. I don't think this is normal.

Do you guys have any idea what is going on? Why are my idle temps so high?

could be just the cpu itself, giving more heat than it should be at your clocks.

Then... what do I do? Is it worth it to buy a new CPU? Are these temps safe to run with on a day to day basis?

I can't help but feel like I'm not getting my moneys worth, and its incredibly frustrating.
