Depends of gfx designer, but for a start max the RAM the motherboard can support and aim for more cores (if it's video editing). Also 3 to 5 HD RAID array and perhaps separate boot drive. You also might want one of thosese 30'' highest possible reso monitors, again depending what exactly is this designer doing it can be either sRGB or full 8 bit one (very expensive). Assuming you are not aiming on high end gfx workstation in what case you should look towards multiple CPU boards that can provide full 4 - 6 PCI-E x16 version 2.0 slots.

For a gamer would suggest cheaper CPU (aim for max GHz per core you can find) and monster GFX card or two (crossfire/sli). Perhaps 69xx series ATI in 3 monitor Eyefinity setup.

For a general computer, something cost effecvtive. 2 to 4 cores at moderate GHz, Approx 4 gigs of ram, single hard disk (~1 TB), onboard sound, up t0 100$ gfx card. Stock cooler.

any color problems can be corrected with color calibration with something like Spyder 3 Pro and proper knowledge of hardware adjustments. The people that mention "buy a mac" are stupid and the comment is as stupid as me saying, buy an Xbox because its for gaming instead of building a PC to game on. Bottom line is you need to figure a budget and what your overall goals are. There are so many types of designing out there. I would have to say a high end Nvidia GPU is a must (has to have CUDA), nothing less than 4 gbs RAM and nothing less than a quad core.

If its for actual graphics design, web site, illustrator, photoshop ect then a single mid range graphics card is more than enough. When creating graphics you need CPU power not GPU as the software doesnt use hardware performace until cs5 but still not much.

If its video edit then you defo want as much ram a possiable as thats how the software works it uses the ram to compile the effects you using. Again a mid range card will be more than enough. Again strong CPU

If its 3D work (which i work in) then u defo need top range cpu and gpu with as much ram as you can. The GPU allows you to have a quick work flow but it doesnt actually render any images the CPU is the actual component that renders the graphics which is where most people go work with 3D workstations. The Ram is needed as it storages the textures in real time. So if your building a city street with each building using 4096*4096 textures you need a lot of ram to be able to keep the workflow quick. You could use a mid range card and it would be fine in most case doing character design. Unless you got a quadro then thats something completely different, above im talking about a geforce as its got more uses say in a freelancers rig than a studio rig, quadro in games is poor due to differnt architecture.

The GPU comes into play in games when its doing real time renders thats where you see the cost of a top end geforce GPU.

most of the graphic designers I visited had a Mac. it would be better to have both systems.

^^ Yet That would defeat the purpose of being custom built wouldnt it not?

Hmmm... if that's the case why are you skimping on quality in regards to Mainboard & Power supply (with the exception of the Corsair)?

Hedging your bets with a little cross forum posting www.pugetsystems.com eh?
