(green power) WD20EARS in RAID 0?

Thread Starter
Anyone had good luck with these?

They do not have TLER ability, but I will be running wdidle /disable on them..
I will be using my motherboards on-board RAID controller and running them in raid 0 - they are going to just be for storage, but I want to run RAID0 for speed boost because the GP drives are bit slow.

I will be doing a data backup (to another drive) from time to time for my most important data.

Thoughts? I have read that a couple people have had good results with these drives in raid.

they should work but you also can have bad luck and they wont run in raid.

Ok well I am ordering them today I will post when I get them to let everyone know how it worked out as well as benchmarks. I am sure other people will be wanting the info because these drives are rather in-expensive and readily available, not to mention quite and power efficient!

* well.. probably less power efficient when I run wdidle /disable on them, but I would rather do it because these drives have tendency to park the heads a bit too often leading to super high counts.

Benchmark, HD Tach v 3.0.4.0

2 x WD20EARS in (Raid0) Intel ICH10R - Raid Mode
399.1 Mb/s Burst // Average read 184.4Mb/s // Random access 13.0ms
________________________________________________

1x WD20EARS (non raid) Intel ICH10R - AHCI Mode
247.5 Mb/s Burst // Average read 99.6Mb/s // Random access 16.6ms
________________________________________________

Conclusion: Really good results!

and so far so good for the raid ability of the drives, I did run wdidle and they were factory set to 8sec, I set them to disabled and it put them at 62min.

Great Results cheers.gif.

I just have a question for you since I am planning on running something simiar.

I am thinking about using a Supermicro board with a Intel ICH9R Chipset for Raid 5 across 4 or 6 Green Drives (I currently have 4x TB Greens, thinking about maybe getting 4x 2TB Greens).

Now ive heard and been doing research in regards to Western Digitals Green drives and RAID Arrays, and the WIDLE and the TLER.

Do you happen to know if Software RAID is effected by TLER?

Did you change your WIDLE in the hopes of increaseing lifespan?, or was it another reason?

And my last question was did you need to create a DOS Enviroment CD in order to use WDIDLE tool or is it bootable?

Thank you for any input:)

**Your drives could drop out of the raid / become marked BAD because they might encounter an error and take to long to come back online. This could happen, but I have yet to experience it.

Did you change your WIDLE in the hopes of increaseing lifespan?, or was it another reason?
** Lifespan is the main reason, also I have read that the drives constantly parking can actually slow data rate and access times. One forum poster I found said his drives would actually park while reading data!

And my last question was did you need to create a DOS Enviroment CD in order to use WDIDLE tool or is it bootable?
** Yes, just google usb boot disk, and download wdidle, I found that some SATA controllers will not work with DOS/wdidle without drivers and I found it much easier to just use another controller, some Onboard intel controllers work, but I had better luck with the marvel raid controller in IDE mode on my particular motherboard.

WORD OF CAUTION:

Yesterday I upgraded my RAM... I had to reset the BIOS to do this, which would not have been an issue, but I forgot to set my intel onboard ICH10 to RAID and it booted into windows in IDE mode.

IT MARKED ONE RAID 0 DRIVE - NON RAID. There is/was no recovery options, and no repair options because I used raid 0. I also then had to delete the whole array because I only had one hard drive showing up as RAID0 stripe, and the other NON RAID.

This is an epic fail on intels part, I have a backup to fall back on, but I still lose data I have been working on for the last month mad.gifsozo.gif

If I had used my add on pcie 4x raid card I used to use this would not have happened, I downloaded test-disk but so far no luck completed one scan and no dice, trying another scan, not holding my breath. This will be the first time I have ever actually 100% lost needed data.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, KEEP BACKUPS, DONT TRUST INTEL ONBORAD SOFTWARE RAID
