Prospective gaming build, advice welcome

Thread Starter
I'm trying to build a decent gaming rig that will handle gaming the next couple years. It has been a while since I've looked at hardware, and I'm entirely unfamiliar with AMD processors, so advice would be great.
I'm planning on reusing my case and cd/dvd drive. Any recommendations for cooling and power supply?

Ditch the 1333 ram and go with 1600. Any brand you trust will be fine (kingston, g-skill, etc..). Lower timings will give you the best results with amd setups. Also, no real need to go more than 4 gigs for gaming unless you just want more.

Some recommendations:
4 gigs
PNY xcererate cas8 $40 after $20 mir
G-skill trident cas 8 $65
Mushkin cas7 $65

8gigs
G-skill sniper cas9 $100. G-skill usually oc's well - posted on newegg feedback - 1600Mhz - 7-9-8-24 1T @ 1.60v
Mushkin cas9 $104
It's so little!

u spending way too much for a mobo , in my opinion here is my advice to change things up for better price
Mobo+CPU 265$ (-10$ MIR) very good mobo , CF x8x8 support and PhII 965
RAM 100$ decent overclocker
6950 260$ after 10$ promo card and -30$ MIR making it the best 230$ card (btw if u havent noticed you've chosen a gimp 6950 1GB for 245$ ...)
PSU 120$ after promo code (-30$ MIR)
CPU Cooler 35$ (-10$ MIR)
HDD 65$ slightly better then seagate same price
good luck with ur build !

only thing i would change is ram and hdd. go with a 2x2 1600mhz kit. then look at a samsung f3 spinpoint or wd black hdd. as for power supply look in to a good 650 or a 750 if your planning on crossfire up the road. and i don't recommend msi motherboards. go with your choice or an 89gtd pro.the money you save on the mobo could go toward a x6(1090t)all though the 955 is fine for gaming.

@badwrench, I do some hobbyist video editing, so extra ram is nice.

@RabbitGT, if I was to buy another 6950 for CF later on, would it physically fit on that motherboard?

@toys72, any particular reason you don't like MSI? Is it just overall quality?

Also, forgot to mention that I'd probably only be doing modest overclocks at most. My cash flow isn't too great, so I try to get the longest lifespan out of my rigs. (Sigrig is proof of that)

i would go with the asus 890gtd pro for the simple fact it has 8 phase power and proper heatsinks for cooling. msi use's 4+1 power phase which can be a serious problem when it comes to ocing and x6 cpu's. that msi is also an matx mobo which will cause crossfired cards to run very hot. there is some really good deals on the egg right now for 2x4 ram kits($99)8 gig

that msi board has very good heatsinks and is known to do 4Ghz on 965 no problem but i guess ur right about CF , heat may become an issue if the case doesnt have any side fans
here is a little step up in the board mobo
