Vsync questions!

Thread Starter
1.) Do i need minimum 60+fps to play in vsync?
2.) My monitor is 60hz - is it even physically capapble of displaying more than 60fps - is anything more just a waste?
3.) In a game where i'm getting roughly 60fps average, but getting minimum's of 35-45fps can i still turn vsync on?
4.)In a game like Dirt 2 where i'm getting 90+fps is it better to turn vsync on or to play at the higher framerate.

Any vsync knowledge would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

1: Vsync is optimal at around 60FPS (or MORE) for a 60hz monitor. However, it will work with lower FPS as well

2: No your monitor cannot see anything more than 60FPS. It's 60hz. 120hz displays could see 120FPS

3: Sure go ahead. Tearing will probably reduce a lot. It'll help.

4: Again, no worries. Turning on vsync will not provide any disadvantages. Your monitor can't display more than 60FPS anyhow...

Uhh no it can't. 60hz LCD displays are limited to a maximum of 60FPS. Why do you think people get 120hz displays? Because they can show more than 60FPS, they can show 120

Why do you think that almost no competetive player uses 60hz LCDs to game? Because 60hz can only show 60FPS and it's bad for gameplay. If the screen itself refreshes at 60 times per second, you can only see the stuff on the screen change 60 times per second = 60FPS.

The FPS count that fraps or some other program shows does not care about the monitor. The game might actually be outputting 120941351235FPS but you will only see 60FPS out of those...

VSYNC can cause mouse input lag, which may be affect your gaming esp in FPS

omg.... the game is producing 100+ FPS but the monitor is only able to use 60 FPS because it is refreshing at that rate (or taking samples) think of the monitor as a camera, its taking 60 pictures per second (samples) but the real image is obviously much faster than that.

edit: essentially the monitor is taking 60 "pictures" of the DVI or VGA input per second.

Because the computer is outputting 100FPS but the monitor will only select 60 of those and only display the 60 that it has chosen. OKAY?!

God... Don't post unless you're 100% sure about something. Only distracts the op...
