DNS preference

Thread Starter
Are there any benefits to alternate DNS services? Google's site, for instance states speed and the security of their infrastructure.

Google's 8.8.8.8 is pretty easy to remember.

Are DNS servers pointed to your ISP by default? Does it really matter?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think there would be DNS is just to add a name to a ip address because a name would be easier to remember then a number. Yes if it's set to DHCP then it will pick up the ip for your connection and unless stated otherwise it will also populate your dns with your isp's default.

I default all my machines to 8.8.8.8, because my ISP's DNS is just utter rubbish. Then there's also OpenDNS, which allows you to do some neat tricks if you create a (free?) account, like malicious filtering etc.

Depends.
From your ISP compared to google you might have a couple of ms difference, but it would be nothing noticeable. Google's memorable IP seems to be decent in order to either troubleshoot DNS or set up a quick pointer to a known DNS server.

If you want something that automatically blocks certain domain names (or where you can manually block specific sites), a solution like OpenDNS is very easy to implement.

i use opendns on all of my computers. i was amazed how much speed i gained over my verizon dns.

I usually use opendns and my ISP's DNS as secondary. Try namebench to find the fastest DNS for you.

OpenDNS is pretty good, so is Google's Public DNS.

I was using OpenDNS for awhile, but decided to go back to my ISP's DNS to test if I could tell a difference.

Didn't notice anything, so I'm sticking with my ISP's DNS.
