overclocking my 965

Thread Starter
Ok, just built this system. i have questions on if i am using the right settings to oc. i got a 965 (the latest one) with a msi NF980-G65. in my bios i first took up the cpu multiplier up till i could not go any more (x20) then i took up the buss speed to i could not go any more (206), i left everything else on AUTO giving me 4.13ghz.

should i be changing anything else like volts or anything.

thanks for they help.

i'm guessing that it won't last 20 seconds in prime95 you have a BE cpu...all you have to do is change the multiplier and raise the vcore as needed. when you up the multiplier you need to try to run prime95 and see if its stable. i'd say about 20min at a time. then when you reach the desired speed run prime for 6+ hours to see if it's really stable or not.

206 on the bus speed seems a little too low. I can get 255 bus speed on my sub-standard matx board.

You might want to try overclocking the other way round. Lower your multi, up your bus speed to it's max and then up the multi as much as you can, trying to find the right balance between the two.

Also try not to go over 1.45v, and keep your temps below 55c.
Keep your HT-Link at between 1900-2100mhz (2000mhz is good).
Northbridge should be set between 2600-3000mhz. NB Voltage at no more than 1.3v.
Anything between 1333-1800mhz for your RAM should be good enough.

You should turn off things like cool'n'quiet, thermal throttle and spread spectrum when overclocking IMO. Turn them back on if you need them once you have your overclock.

even 4.1GHz on a C3 revision 965 is kind of tricky, try lowering your multiplier and upping your FSB. I attached a screenie of my current settings.

You vcore shouldn't be 'locked'. You should be able to set it to manual.

I have a 965BE with a Asus board... But my settings are:
16.5 multiplier
250 fsb
Dram 1667
CPU/nb 2750
Ht 2000
CPU volt 1.5
CPU/nb 1.3
Dram volt 1.5 (depends on your
rams voltage)
Hope this helps... It puts me just over 4.1 and prime stable.

I am able to get it to 4.250 stable but settings wouldn't give the CPU a long life...

I have that proc/mobo combo (see sig rig below) and to my knowledge nothing is locked for'se. Running now at 4.125 nice n' stable on everything, your mileage may vary and I'm interested to see your results, but I had a heck of a time going much past 4.2 without getting into some pretty big v jumps. You said 206 was your no post limit on the fsb? Surely you could get more out of the fsb, I want to say 260 fsb and 2600 north bridge seem to be the fuzzy edge of were you can go with the board. Think Ill sub this thread.
