intel xeons .... aka server cpus .. where more cores = better ....

more virtual machines could be run .. or more computing power for your compute cluster ...

if for us it sounds lame ... for them it doesnt ... they need more computing power on a smaller footprint ... so more cores is always better ..

This is for servers.... not consumers. You would buy one if already have workloads that would utilize it. There are plenty of server workloads that could utilize it.

One of my projects generates 5000 threads and each thread takes 10 minutes to run. They are will to wait 3-4 days for results.

On a sidenote.... there are no Intel Xeons that run at 3GHz+ and support more than 24 threads.

I was in the market for a 3.2-3.6GHz Intel server that supported 32-40 threads. The fastest Intel Xeon are hexcore for 2 sockets.

Yeah..... dropping $100K every 1-3 years for new servers can be routine for divisions within the enterprise world. My shop is just 10 system developers, 15 modelers, and maybe 120 users. It really depends but be prepared for sticker shock if you're just entering the corporate server world.

Remember, the cost isn't just the hardware.

I'm about to finish up a 2-year CIS tech degree and they didn't go over that, lol. Just programming, database, and A+ & Network+ certifications.

Why? He's actually right. It will take a long long time for any software to make use of 12 cores. Until then, and even a while afterwards 6x4Ghz > 12x2Ghz.

Yeah, there are so few applications that can take advantage of 12 cores.

I mean, after virtualization, database, web serving, cloud, business intelligence, rendering, HPC, financial processing, what else is there?

Well, the other 5-10% of the market.

Let's face it, if you don't need 12 cores, don't buy 12-core processors, but don't try to tell everyone else that they don't need them because they do.

If nobody needs them, why did intel just release 10-core processors? Why are they going to continue to push core counts up on their other processors?

Hm. Aren't we talking desktops here? If its server CPUs then yes, you're totaly right and I agree 100%, I can witness first hand how much a dual core struggles compared to a quad at the office server.

The CPU in the OP is targeted for servers.
