Looks like robbery. I mean really I'm guessing it's priced like that because companies willing to pay it? Is it really that much at COST?

Like I had said... sticker shock. The hardware is only a portion of the price. The cost comes from certification, reliability, and support. Is it worth it to save $10K on hardware that is running a $100M+ business? A single day of downtime would cost over a million on wasted employee time and missed trades.

What if I told you a Sun or IBM AIX server costs 4-8 times as much for the same performance?

I highly agree with this statement! The Lawfirm I work for has invested a little over half a million into our network we have 400 in house employees and about 200 offshore/at home employees If our network goes out or we loose power the amount of money we lose every hour is astronomical! It really is worth it to pay the extra to get the best equipment and service. For example we had a drive die in a raid array in one of our sans and we have next day service for replacement parts from dell. Well needless to say we had a new drive in our hands 30 minutes later.

Lol such pointless tech im a straight up gamer thats all i use my rig for and its even rediculous most games dont use 4 cores let alone 6 that i have well 24 cores dual xeons lol but 10 cores on a chip is just getting silly only thing that will benefit that is maybe folding or video editing and even video editing doesnt fully utilize 6 cores i just dont get this i understand tech moves forward but seriously lol 10 cores is just waist of money. My xeons were even overkill and there 6 cores each.

the article talks about server cpus .. so its most likely that these cpus would see the use they were designed for in the first place .. so having more cores for vm duty or compute clusters for rendering or whatever it may be is what they will do .. to wich these apps deffinatly can be coded to work for more then 10 000 cores or just run 10 000 virtual machines on a few physical servers ... saves cost for a company .. thus is a right purchase for them .... so in that sense his comment is pointless ... even if the xeon have a higher ipc .. if the price is right to order some opteron based server then the people making the purchase decision would go to them instead ...

its all about the roi .. and tco to them ... nothing else

Such pointless tech... to you. However, you do not make up the market.

Folding or video editing... that's all? There are plenty of application that can use 10, 20, 1000, 10000, etc cores.

Why don't people understand this?
