Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the new cluster design add a more parallel structure to the traditional 1 core per thread? Even hyper-threading is still a linear structure.

Does nobody on OCN encode video? More threads are great for h264 or mpeg2 encoding, even dvdflick lets you use up to 8 threads. I do wish more software would be coded for better use of cores in general, but that won't happen until 4 cores or more are standard on pc's. It's still a dual core world out there..

Before "somebody" spoiled the fun and told me Bulldozer was going to be 8 cores maximum for the first generation, I was like..."OMG! OMGZ! OYEZ! Bulldozer gonna have 16 cores! Server level processors for all of us! AMD gonnaz creams Intel! Eatz zat Intel! You neva gonna beat them dis time!". Now Intel is like, "we need moar cores! AMD ain't gonna beat us! AMD beatz us 4 neva!" I'm bored of this moar coarz game.

I dont understand what you find so funny about that? He's right. AMD doesn't have Hyper threading at the moment so they just added 2 extra cores.

haha. xD

I think it all depends how AMD is going to pull off their new design. It isn't necessarily just more cores by my understanding, it feels like a transition of switching from the CPU design to a more combined CGPU design. If it works out on not only single threaded, but multi-threaded operations as well, AMD is going to hit it big, even if the performance is only on par with Intel. The next stages is where bulldozer is going to fly.

When the cores are taxed, hyper threading actually decreases the overall performance on the chip.

I'm not sure you understand what a thread is, then.

It really depends what your doing, for multi core software the CPU with Hyper threading should be faster. For single core software it will be slower.

I do understand the way Hyper threading works, and yes Hyper threading doesn't always improve performance.
