Better gpu or cpu

Thread Starter
I've been looking to put together a rig and due to budget constraints I could go with a HD6950 and a Phenom II X2 and hope to unlock some cores or a HD6870 and Phenom II X4. This rig will almost exclusively be used for gaming and playing at 1080p. Given the options what would you choose?
I'd say get the HD6870 and the Phenom II X4, you'll really want the power of a quad for gaming.
Most current games will like the X2 and 6950 better than the X4 and 6870, you will gain more fps with the 6950 than the 6870. Most games are dual threaded, so dual core will do just fine, maybe you will get a 3rd or 4th core out of it?

Most games don't use 6 cores. Only about 2-4. Something like that. Possibly 2-3. I would get an x4 and a 6950. Get an x2 if you want.

How long do you plan on keeping this rig? If its just a short term solution then the X2 and 6950 will be better. If you want something that will last for awhile get the X4, and upgrade the GPU later when you have the funds.

I as faced with a similar decision man,
either a GTX 260 216core and keep my 4800+ x2,
or GTS 250 and a Phenom x4 955 BE

I chose the quad and 250, because of all the starcraft I play.
I couldn't be happier, I agree with everyone else in saying if it's short term get the dual core option.
if you're not planning on upgrading after for a while, definately get the Quad.

seriously the 6870 pretty much handles most anything you throw at it .. look at it this way if you get a dual core amd you might be bottle necked by the processor .. but if you get the x4 and the 6870 you can over clock it to 965mhz and the memory up to 1100 mhz pretty easy .. and go from there .. depending on the games you play but for me like unreal tournament 3 black edition i get 350+ fps and average around any where between 150 to 250 fps with all settings at max and like supreme commander 2 dosnt even touch it .. no issues with with most of the games i have played with this system.. so dont fear man its a great gaming card.. I would say later on you could do crossfire also.. plays fall out like a champ on max settings

SLI hack . I'm going to be running SLI 470's on my 790FX board once they come down in price, and I can afford another .

I figured that I would get the HD6950 and the X2 and hope to unlock some cores. get the better GPU now and maybe later down the road if Bulldozer is priced right I'd go that route. Thanks +rep!
