Forced to underclock my RAM

As you can see from my system specs, I have 12GB of 1600 DDR3 RAM.

In most overclocked systems I've seen where most of my current hardware is included, they have 6GB of RAM and are able to get at least 2:8 at a 4.0GHz overclock with an i7 920 D0.

Right now I'm in the process of stabilizing my overclock. I have my CPU multiplier set to 20x (with turbo on, it's 21x). I also have my bclock set to 191, which gets me 191x21 for 4GHz. I set my memory timings to 9-9-9-24-1T (stock), and with my Uncore multiplier at 16x, my memory is at 1200 instead of the stock advertised 1600, since I use the lowest memory ratio, 2:6

If I try bumping it up to 2:8, memtest fails horribly and that's not the only thing. Not all 12GB of my RAM is registered by the system, sometimes my system only shows that 6GB or 8GB is installed. My RAM isn't damaged, because all 12GB show up if I run at 2:6. I have my DIMM voltage set to 1.65 and my CPU VTT is set to +200mV.

I'm air cooled and I don't think I can handle a 4GHz overclock, since bumping up my vcore past 1.225 (without vdroop) results in temps at 80C at load. My tests look good so far but I get BSoDs that aren't really very well known, like 0x3D, so I don't know what about my overclock is causing that.

Is 12GB too much RAM for a good overclock? Should I take out 6GB of that (3 dimms)?

Try dropping to 2T first. uncore is fine, cpu voltage is a bit low.... but meh.

also, this might help....

0x101 = increase vcore
0x124 = increase/decrease vcore or QPI/VTT...have to test to see which one it is
0x0A = unstable RAM/IMC, increase QPI first, if that doesn't work increase vcore
0x1E = increase vcore
0x3B = increase vcore
0xD1 = QPI/VTT, increase/decrease as necessary
0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency or uncore multi unstable, increase RAM voltage or adjust QPI/VTT, or lower uncore if you're higher than 2x
0x116 = Low IOH (NB) voltage, GPU issue (most common when running multi-GPU/overclocking GPU)

You probably have a bad RAM stick somewhere installed with the rest of your RAM that doesn't overclock well. At least that what happened with me before.

I would test each stick to see which one it might be, so to see if they can run the full specs. If one (or more) of them fails at memtest, then you just found the bad stick(s).

try to up your vcore a bit, and try VTT +0.240mV
Best to leave vdimm at 1.65, any higher could damage the IMC controller.

For that kind of amount of ram, it's not uncommon that everything requires a little more voltage to be stable.

6 DIMMs and overclocking don't go well together. Taking out 3 sticks will allow you higher frequency with less CPU VTT voltage. If you're questioning taking it out, do you really need it in the first place? I mean I've never even utilized close to all 6gb of my memory at one time. What do you do on your computer that benefits from having 12gb?

What voltages should I use for VTT and DIMM with 6 memory modules? I'm currently running a VTT of +250mV and a DIMM voltage of 1.65 and linx fails after 10-12 minutes. Sometimes I also get a 0x50 or 0x1A BSoD. I'm not sure how much higher I can push these values. I'm currently testing 1.675 DIMM voltage, and I've tried +300mV and 1.65 DIMM with no luck.

your ram is rated 1.5 to 1.65v max, so don't take that any higher. Far as I know it also could damage the IMC on the chip.

+200mv vtt is only 1.3V and you need to factor in vdroop and load voltage rise, normally within .05V.
try +250mv - +275mv and 1.68 - 1.7V

Running more sticks doesn't effect how much memory voltage you need at all... If the kit's rated at 1.65v and you're running it at spec, then keep it at 1.65v. VTT varies so much from processor to processor, you keep raising it until it's stable... We can't tell you how much you need.

Actually, EVGA boards (and pretty much every other board) use a value of 1.2v to start with, so running +200 mV is actually 1.4v.

only classified is 1.2v default, trust me ive checked.
