I'm guessing you don't have a password recovery disk formatted for it.

Do you mean the OS password? Or have you got a boot password that you set in the BIOS.
If you haven't used it in years do you really need any data on it?

Make an Ubuntu LiveCD. Boot using the CD and grab all the files you need. Reformat the drive and reinstall Windows.
Sorry mate, there really isn't much of a way to recover Windows passwords. I've heard good things about ophcrack, never worked for me but you might want to give it a shot.

EDIT: Here's the link for OphCrack:

If it has XP, can you boot into safe mode and remove password there?

I don't have any ideas for the problem, but if reformatting, you'll need to buy a new os since you don't have a recovery disk. It may have a recovery partition. What is the make and model?

I've got a old core 2 duo laptop with a 1.5ghz clock speed. With win &, this thing flies! Get win7, even if on XP or anything. Second is to get a betters HDD. My laptop's HDD was pitifully slow, but new HDD will surely speed it up!
