Which Option is Better?

Wow, long time since i posted here! But I digress...

Time to finally upgrade my rig, My poor Q9300 really has been buckling under how much I push the thing (I'm an absurd multitasker) and I'm starting to get annoyed as it chugs to process the 18 megapixel files from my 7D and im feeling quite CPU-bound in my games lately...

My goal is to improve all around performance and to get myself the core parts for another 4-year system, I game at 1920x1200 and I cant necessarily turn everything up in the most demanding games at the moment and a few releases around the corner make me feel apprehensive(Shogun Total War 2 for instance, since im betting its going to be a CPU hog like Empire was and like Civ V is)...

The bigger annoyance of course is Photoshop/Lightroom performance, which right now is "stuttery" when im editing and exporting photos....

My computer is run 24/7, 365 days a year practically, I run dual screens (One my 24" monitor which i game/edit on and one is my 58" 1080p Plasma i watch videos and such on) My computer is used for practically everything at once sometimes too, Which is uhm...Whats the word...excessive But its how i work!

I think I can hold in there for Sandy Bridge P67s to get back out there...and before they were pulled i had built up the following rig at Newegg:

-------

NZXT Phantom case
Blue or Red Sleeved LED cabling
Corsair AX850 850Watt Modular Power Supply

i7-2600k
Asus Sabertooth P67 Motherboard
8gbs (2x4gb) G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3-1600 CAS8
Corsair Hydro H60 CPU Cooler or a Rasa kit...

eVGA GTX570 Superclocked

2x 500gb Western Digital RE4s

-----------------

My total is at $1600 or so

(I'm kinda an nVidia fan because I've simply had a lot of issues with the last AMD card I had, and im interested in getting a 3DVision setup now...)

So what do you all think?

Also im going to make this my first stable overclocking build, im hoping to hit 4.5 on the i7-2600k, You guys think i can manage it?

Unfortunately, if you are willing to buy sandy bridge now, you got to wait till April due to SATA port failure.

Why not you buy a GTX580 or GTX570(if you are on budget) and use the GTX460 for PhysX?

The rest of your list is fine but I recommend you to aim for SSD rather than Velociraptors because the performance from SSD to HDD, the gap is wider.

Another tips:
If you are buying a GTX580 with a GTX460, it's better to have a 850w PSU. Otherwise, the 750w PSU will work very hard.

Indeed..originally i was going to ask "or is an X58 an acceptable compromise with an i7-950/960 and similar specs except for 12GB of ram or so" But I think I can hang in there, my birthday is in march (March 1st...but still) and also traditionally, I get a new desktop about April anyways (Uh, Its been that way the last 3 rigs I built lol) it also gives me a little more time to stash up some extra $$....

That is an idea i suppose, i didnt even think of using my current 460 as a PhysX card actually, it slipped my mind

I also considered just sticking with the single 460 for the time being until i could afford a 580 instead, the 460 is no slouch and i feel that my FPS is likely CPU-bound, not card bound

An SSD is a consideration, I think I'm apprehensive because I'm new to SSDs and I'm afraid I would not have enough C: drive space...Also i read a lot of reviews on the lesser expensive SSDs that seem to indicate they like to die lol... I think I'd have to have at least a 256gb one though...I'm not sure 128 is enough....I'd want to put my OS/games/apps/currently editing photos on the SSD correct? Then I could change the 1TB WD to a RAID 1 array and use it for my sensative files/downloads/etc that dont need the speed....

Are there good 256gb SSDs in the price range of the Velociraptors?

I'd wait for the dust to settle on SB, but you certainly would not be dissapointed to move to an i7.

i think the sluggishness if your pc is from not having a SSD but doing alot of multitasking from programs on your current HDD. is your cpu really at 2.5ghz? try getting a SSD (60GB or 128) and overclocking your cpu to at least 3.0ghz.

Worst case it wont improve much and you still want to get a i7 but at least you can use the SSD in your new i7

you should instead your OS + all programs (Not games) onto the SSD.
Games don't load too much faster so its not worth it. You could get another drive and run RAID5 for your games and SSD for your OS + main programs.

this is very popular (not the RAID5 part), and its not worth it at $2 per gig of game... starcraft II is like 9GB, so thats 18$ to store it, lol.

^- My processor isnt stable above 2.5 at all, I tried a lot to get it OCd and i definately have sufficient cooling, i just got a bum part for it

As for the SSD upgrade one problem is i do not want to muck around in this system anymore trying to upgrade it, its got some other more severe issues that i havnt talked about, i've somehow resuscitated her from the dead 3 times now (Shes completely and utterly lobotomized the bios at random on me 3 times, despite replacing the battery after the first time, nuked the entire OS drive when i shut her down one time, etc, theres a reason im pretty anal about backing her up :/)

Also i have been killing everything lately to edit photos/game and its still sluggish as hell, I feel my needs/desires have completely outgrown this system (or theres some more severe hardware issues, im convinced my drive controller is dying actually) and I doubt its the HDDs causing the issues :/

No offense i know you're trying to help and save money, my patience with this rig has just hit its breaking points and i need to start completely fresh, i made mistakes on this build, and its honestly been a lot of trouble for me for a long time...

I changed my power supply to a PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 950 watt

I'm thinking of ordering the power supply and case and starting to get the pieces together....

I'm getting my crap together now....Finalizing some decisions:

-Changed out the power supply..again, Decided on a Corsair AX850 instead, the PC Power and Cooling one felt way..way overkill for me personally and i wanted a modular supply....

-I looked into an SSD and decided against it for now, Simply not big enough for me, my programs take up 120gbs easily and if i cant benefit from the improved load times in most programs i really dont see the point (as my computer is not turned off every day boot times mean little to me) the SSDs just feel way too expensive for me despite the performance improvement and I'd prefer to wait it out until they get to $250 for a 256gb one...

-Instead im getting a pair of WD RE4 500gb drives to put in a RAID 0, Of all the options this feels like the best price to performance ratio for me...(I read bad things happen with the newer Black Editions in a RAID...) and the drives themselves are faster than my current 640gb BE Raid....

-I'm going with some G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3-1600 CAS 8 over the Corsair because its slightly cheaper and should be just as good (plus i heard good things about G.Skill a lot of places..)

-The biggest change was to a single eVGA Superclocked GTX570 over the dual 460s, the 460s feel a bit "constrained" to me and like im pinning myself in with no room to grow (if this makes sense) whereas with the GTX570 i should have the option to go to a dual card setup in the future

Do you guys think i should be able to get this system up to 4.5 easily enough? Thats what I'm hoping, I want my first stable OC rig....
