Noob question concerning optical connection?

Thread Starter
Thinking of getting xifi titanium hd. Want 5.1 for gaming and occasional video editing, as well as advantage of swappable op amps for my collection of live concerts (soundboard and audience recordings). Will using the optical connection bypass the op amps?

Yes, optical connection provides a digital signal of the sound. This means there's no difference in sound quality with the Titanium HD and the mobo's optical (if it has it).

Thanks for the clarification! Was trying to justify leaving my onboard optical for a good soundcard. Not happening anytime soon, but thinking about Swan M50W and a quality card that can have op amps switched (mod or card with replaceable option).

How are you taking the signal from your mixing console when recording?

Yup. No need for sound card if you're using optical from the mobo. I've got mine hooked up to my home theater receiver and it sounds badass.

My 5.1 mixing is not being done professionally by any means! I am just mixing in extra tracks as filler for home videos and vhs conversions. I edit with Vegas Pro 9. This isn't a major concern as I very rarely create 5.1 edits.

I was mainly referring to the live recordings.

Or have I misunderstood you completely? I was thinking you run sound for concerts and want to make recordings from that.

No. My mistake. These are various recordings I've collected from others over the years. I would just like a setup that doesn't miss some of the frequencies when listening.
